AMERCIAN IDIOT reports on here have been grossly exaggerated. And the critics in the Bay Area were doing some serious starf***ng. The show has promise, but needs works. And hopefully Mayer finds it himself, since critics were of little help.
And didn't QUARTET announce its presence awhile back. Truth be told, I forgot, too. It sounds like JERSEY BOYS meets MEMPHIS. But it's been a big hit in Chicago...

No Blaxx, the folks who called it a "Hot Mess" and predicted it would run a week were the ones I was addressing.
And has everyone written off Addams Family already, too?

Posted: 11/3/09 at 8:49pmI'm scared about Addams. Usually when the project combines such big names with a franchise, bad things happen.

JoeKv - ADDAMS FAMILY will be a much bigger hit than this "Million Dollar" jukebox garbage.
No judging. Saw the MDQ production in Chicago. Speaking from personal opinion. Not every single show deserves the benefit of the doubt; especially if the material is marketed terribly to begin with.
This show may be a financial hit but it will lack any artistic integrity. I promise that much, JoeKv. But I guess Broadway ain't like that anymore so what do I know??? Ugh.

Posted: 11/3/09 at 9:17pmJoe, I'm not writing it off for no reason. I saw the show and I was incredibly disappointed. Look, maybe a lot of work is being done on it, I don't know. If it ends up a better show than the one I saw, good for them. I'm not wishing it poorly, I just don't think it can last because it's not that great.

Posted: 1/19/10 at 2:49pmWith the show starting previews in less than two months are there any casting rumors circling about? Last I heard the hope is to have the Chicago production and the NY production playing concurrently. Would they take the Chicago cast members to NYC and replace them with other actors or cast New York actors for the Broadway production?

Posted: 1/19/10 at 2:55pmI think the big question is: Will anybody go see it? There seems to be little-to-no buzz regarding the Broadway production and I've never heard any positive word-of-mouth on the Chicago production. I listened to the CD and saw the Chicago cast perform during the local Thanksgiving Day parade and had zero interest in seeing the show.

Posted: 1/19/10 at 2:59pmI know a few people who aren't into theatre like we are who are interested in seeing it. Mostly because of the music so this could turn out to be a tourist hit. Hard to say at this point though.

Posted: 1/19/10 at 4:49pmI saw Million Dollar Quartet on Jan. 10th and found it very entertaining. Would I buy the CD ? no. Would I see it again ? probably not. Does it belong on Broadway ? not really. - It would work well off-Broadway. The Apollo Theatre in Chicago seats 440. That size space works well for Million Dollar Quartet. The intimate and loud experience would be lost at the 1200 seat Nederlander Theatre.

What I saw in Chicago was a horrible disaster of a show. Great performers (who are more impersonating than acting, in my opinion), but the book is laughably bad and does nothing for the songs.
I was stunned to hear this was coming to Broadway.

Still have yet to see this...gotta find some cheap seats one day. But to be honest with all the wonderful theatre I have around me I am in no hurry to spend my money on this show... (p.s. I'm in Chicago)

Posted: 1/20/10 at 12:06amHaven't seen it yet in Chicago. Although, tickets have been on Hottix frequently. I really don't see it succeeding at the Nederlander at all. When the production was announced, I was hoping they would book Circle in the Square.

The number of new musicals this Broadway season DOES outnumber the revivals:
* 'The Addams Family'
* 'All About Me'
* 'American Idiot'
* 'Burn the Floor'
* 'Come Fly Away'
* 'Fela!'
* 'Memphis'
* 'Million Dollar Quartet'
* 'Sondheim on Sondheim'
If you're talking about book musicals with NEW original scores, the pickin's are slim: only 'Addams Family' and 'Memphis' seem to qualify, but who knows? Maybe there's still an Off-Broadway transfer that we don't know about yet ...
