MTI announced recently that you can now start applying for rights to perform Thoroughly Modern Millie. Hairspray and Little Women (recent Broadway version) are new acquisitions to MTI and licensing rights are not quite avalibale

I AM SOO EXCITED!!! Did you get an email from MTI about this? I usually get stuff like that from them, but I haven't seen anything.

The MTI website says Millie is "currently restricted." What exactly does this mean? Will it become avaliable soon or could the process take many years? Thanks in advance.

MTI is an agent that releases rights for shows, collects fees for the rights, and shares the profits with the show's actual owner. (No, MTI doesn't actually own all of it's shows).

RESTRICTED means that the show's owners have decided that the show should not be performed during certain dates or in a certain area of the U.S.

If you wish to secure the rights, contact MTI and they will tell you if the restriction applies to you.

Restricted also frequently means that they're only releasing rights to professional houses or that they will not be releasing rights at all until a current tour completes its run.

I am so excited about Little Women. I really think that this is going to be a great hit in community theatres across the country (especially us in the New England area). I am concerned that "Astonishing" will be tough for many high school students to pull off, but there is a lot of talent in many community theatres. Hairspray is going to be the biggest thing since Beauty and the Beast for high school as well as community, and while I hesitate on Millie because of the level of dancing that many high schools have a tough time pulling off, it is also a great show to translate to these venues. This is great news for community theatres as well as high schools (and, unlike some other shows--ahem, see Urinetown thread--won't cause any controversy--then again, you never know)
