Well, it's with anything.
Comic Books became a trend after "Spider-Man" came out
LOTR became a trend when the movie came out
etc.
These people are BEYOND passionate about their love for these things, but you don't see them in a complete uproar about it. They are glad that more people are getting involved into the thing they love.
"I think it's really bad that something that so many people think of as a passion will become so mainstream that you won't be able to distinguish theatre people from theatre fakers."
Theatre used to be in the mainstream and it was called the "Golden Age of Broadway," but now it is becoming mainstream again, it is a bad thing? I just don't understand.

Why would it upset you that it's a trend? More people watching and doing theater. What's wrong with that? Who are you all to say what people should/shouldn't like? You all have to face the fact that this is the way theater is going in 2006.

I agree DJ! Several individuals, even on this very thread, laud the days of "Old Broadway". Yet, they seem to forget that the grand old days of Broadway existed primarily because musical theater was such a driving force in pop culture!

Les Miz...inaccessible?
I know, it's just flies over the heads of the audiences, as opposed to the deep philosophical shows like...oh...Sound of Music.
Oh the Golden Age...

spiderdj82 - Actually, my brother is beyond obbsessed with Comic Books, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Yugi Oh, etc. and he is upset when he sees someone who is getting into them just because other people are. So I think some people can be upset about this.

I just don't see the point. Like someone else said in this thread, who are you to say who can and cannot like something just because you hold it as sacred? If it was just theatre fans that were "allowed" to like theatre, then it will surely die out. That is why it almost went away in the 70s and 80s, because it feel out of the mainstream's eye.

Fenchurch is just annoying me... Okay some of us have a theatre bubble(Quota someone who I forgot the name of) sure Im a teen but I love theatre because of the major respect us theatre lovers have for it... and when you here what you love and have such a major respect for being called a "trend" you would be friggin pissed too!
Ugh, I give up!

Only if you're insecure Spamdiva
And judging by your username, I don't think you're anyone to talk.
I mostly agree with SpamalotDiva. I am mad but not "friggin pissed."
I just bothers me that people are calling something, that is my passion, a "trend."

So because you're brother does it it's okay for everyone? I guess I missed the memo that your brother = goal for society.
Get over it people. More people into theatre only means good things. If you only like things that are not mainstream then I guess start finding a new hobby, but I guess that means you never really liked theatre in the first place.
And Yankee.. it's 2007. W000t!
New people liking theater is great. Like I've said before, when people start calling theater a "trend" it bothers me. A lot.
"If you only like things that are not mainstream then I guess start finding a new hobby, but I guess that means you never really liked theatre in the first place. "
That statement is utterly false. I understand why some would be angered about this. It doesn't mean they never liked theater in the first place.

Theater itself is not being referred to as a trend, but rather theater re-entering pop culture is the trend. It's no different than any other artistic trend that comes or goes. Though their popularity will ebb and flow (which, again will directly influence their supply/demand ratios and production outputs) they still will always exist in some form, just not promenading across MTV.

Please explain to me how someone who only likes theatre when it's not mainstream is someone who ever actually liked theatre and wasn't a snob who just liked liking something that was "exclusive"
Sondhead I misunderstood your post. I thought you meant that just because people were mad theater was becoming mainstream they didn't really like theater in the first place. Now I agree with your statement about people who just stop liking theater because it is mainstream weren't really theater fans in the first place. Such bullcrap!!!!! The theatre is our thang!!!!!
You guys make very good arguments, and maybe I'll just have to learn to accept theater being a mainstream thing.
I just don't see the point. Like someone else said in this thread, who are you to say who can and cannot like something just because you hold it as sacred? I don't think any of us are really saying no one else can like theatre. That's just unheard of. And I totally support the popularity of theatre for the ticket sales, but at the same time, I do find it a bit frustrating. You know when you're going out to see a show you maybe have seen before or that you may absolutely adore and you hear people around you talking about it, maybe saying bad things, maybe misinforming each other about it.. you can't honestly tell me you don't get the urge to correct them or that you feel something about what they said inside. It's kind of like that. You feel like you know and love theatre the most. Even if there's other fans who know it better than you or have liked something longer, it's frustrating.
I'm all for introducing theatre to people who may not have given it a second look before. That's great. But then you get the pretentious few who turn it around into thinking they've been a fan of the theatre all their lives and that's when it crosses the line of aggravation. When someone takes a few nights to see Wicked, Hairspray and Avenue Q and calls themselves a theatre-goer, then that's where the problem lies.
Okay, I'm officially rambling. I'm gonna shut myself up before y'all do it for me. LOL.

i_heart_roger_bart's post hit the nail on the head. That is exactly why I'm upset about this!
Stars shows go back all the way to the beginnings of Broadway history. They're still very much alive today (The Boy From Oz). I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.
