Theater is a passion in my eyes. If people think its a trend all they will know is Hairspray, Wicked, and HSM.

And I say again, what's wrong with that? If they stick around longer than the trend lasts, then they will learn about better more eduring pieces, and if they don't well than that's their loss.
But getting upset about it is being a snob, and elitist.
And if that's what theater is about, then I don't want any part of it.
I prefer to think of my passion for theater as all inclusive and open to all.
Theater is a very personal thing for me, and that's why I am so upset about this. I just...shudder to think of the day when everyone in my school is running around in Hairspray shirts.
I officially hate MTV.
I haven't watched MTV in a while. It just bothers me.
Wow...
I haven't watched it either, only because they don't air anything that interests me.
I'm buying ten of those effin HAIRSPRAY shirts.

Again, I don't understand what the problem is.
You should ask yourself why it upsets you.
I predict the honest answer will be thus:
"Because im a pretentious, stuck up, overbearing, elistist snob."

Fechurch, we're angry because we LOVE theatre, but now teens that don't appreciate musicals are going to think they like them because of HSM and Hairspray. Yes, I am a teen, but I appreciate musical theatre (and trust me, I like Hairspray and RENT and all, but I appreciate theatre greater then them.) We're angry because they're going to invade our "bubble" because Zac Efron is in these damn films!

Think they like them? What does that mean? If they like them, then what's the problem? And if they appreciate Hairspray and Grease and the other teenybopper musicals, then they appreciate theater, because its part of the canon. So I really don't get that.

What bubble? I just dont understand, whether you like it or not, these pieces are part of the scene, and if people like them (regardless of their knowledge of "the great pieces") then they are in your bubble.
So get over it.

Only a snob with no interest in the artform's longevity would want this living, breathing, ever-changing, ever-shifting beautiful discipline of theater to be "like it was"
If theater had always been like it was, we would be banging on drums and shouting, women would not be allowed on the stage, and people of color would be totally left out of theater.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
GET OVER YOURSELF
Um...read what you just posted again and then maybe you should get over it and leave!
I agree with Raviolisun, but I can see where Fenchurch is coming from.
It upsets me because it is suddenly a trend, everyone loves it. In time, the trends will change and these people who "LOVED" theatre suddenly don't care about it. I think most (if not all) of the people here at these forums consider Broadway to be a huge passion for them, not just something they could forget about because it isn't popular anymore. I don't have a problem with people liking theatre, but I wish people would at least take the time to really know what they love, not just go through the motions. (If that makes sense?)

Theatre only happens when there's money there, so bring on the teenyboppers.
I don't see why this should anger anyone. Isn't theatre about nothing other than YOU and the PIECE YOU'RE WATCHING? Who cares if a bunch of dumb kids run around thinking they're all into theatre? It's already happening with Wicked, hate to break it to you.
This is as dumb as stupid people who like a band no one knows until everyone finds them and suddenly they suck because they've "sold out". If you like something, like it. No one else's actions should change that.
I hardly consider MTV an authority on legitimate theater in the US!

No, but MTV is indeed an authority on what is popular in this country and what is not.

It's a psychological fact that people hate when the thing they love becomes trendy and popular. I don't think anyone here can truthfully say that they've never felt that way about anything.

I have. (Seinfeld.) haha.
"It's already happening with Wicked, hate to break it to you."
Everyone already knows that.
"No, but MTV is indeed an authority on what is popular in this country and what is not."
To some people.
"There's not many "big names" who could pull of Glinda or Elphaba in Wicked"
Jewel, Beyonce, Alanis, or Christina Aguilera would be some people who I'd be interested to see do it just to see how they would be. There are other people I could think of, but those names alone are probably enough to get me stoned.

People, there are also many positives in the re-popularization of musial theater. The more tickets sold, the more money that pours into the artform, the more productions are funded, the more movie musicals are made and, best of all, the more theatre professionals are employed. It's supply and demand, as demand increases, so will supply.
Yes, we'll see a lot of awful crap being produced but that awful crap that appeals to the masses is what funds more artistic works.
Besides, fads pass and when they involve teenagers they pass quickly. Within 2 years you'll all be able to revel in your theatre elitism again.
Who gives a f-ck? Musicals were a fad in the 50's and early 60's with the variety shows they used to put on that were dedicated to musicals. Then BOOM, it was out of the public eye. Now, it is coming back. I say BRING IT ON. Who cares what it's called, and who cares if they like High School Musical? Whatever gets them interested in theatre is a-ok with me. People need to stop being so snobby about it.
i think everyone needs to remember that trends pass. it will give an influx in money/talent hopefully. try to find the good from the 'bad'
my only issue will be having to elbow middleschool girls in the face for my mary poppins/spring awakening/legally blonde/les miserables/pirate queen tickets come April.
It's a psychological fact that people hate when the thing they love becomes trendy and popular. I don't think anyone here can truthfully say that they've never felt that way about anything.
Definitely. It's hard to say because this makes me seem very shallow, but I hate it when other people I know say anything about theatre. Yeah, I know, I should be supporting it, theatre can't happen without theatregoers. But...as I said, it's a very personal thing for me, and when I see other people treating like a second-rate commodity, I get a little pissed.
Sorry if any of that sounded really stupid.
Well, it's with anything.
Comic Books became a trend after "Spider-Man" came out
LOTR became a trend when the movie came out
etc.
These people are BEYOND passionate about their love for these things, but you don't see them in a complete uproar about it. They are glad that more people are getting involved into the thing they love.
