"WAYYYYYYY before Madonna...WAAAYYYY before WICKED
there was the off-broadway hit "DeLaGuarda' part rave/part performance art/part circus/interactive show that ran a good 6 years or so at the Daryl Roth Theatre and closed this past september."

Maybe it was "Way before Wicked", but certainly not WAY before Madonna. Madonna has been around since 83. De La Guarda opened in the late 90's...So WAAYYY before De La Guarda...

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Well, then Marquise, you must have the most intuitive ear! Because, there have been many pop albums, musicals, heck--even listening to Shakespeare, that requires repeated listening to truly enjoy or assess its worth.

But that you think you have the power to do it in one listen! Wow! We all should be so jealous over your oh so mighty powers, Hun.

my first instinct was that she probably hadn't heard of wicked, but i wouldn't guess britney spears or mandy moore would have either, and britney cited wicked as part of her inspiration to take time off awhile back in a letter to her fans, and mandy loved it so much she wanted to to play Glinda...it's not out of the question...

Madonna goes to Broadway shows. Why would you think she hadn't heard of WICKED? Is it playing at some off-off-off Broadway theatre somewhere?

I dunno, I guess trying to give her the benefit of the doubt... I'd like to hope that if she'd seen wicked and heard "defying gravity" she wouldn't knowingly just take the title as her own..youre probably right though

I'm a die-hard Madonna fan, hence why I bought American Life on the day of its release. Admitting I was disappointed is hardly ripping on her...I still think she's a genius. I just think she may be running out of ideas. However, time will tell. I hope the new record - whatever title it goes by - is amazing.

I'd like to see her do another film musical, something tailor made for her that would appeal to most people. Maybe comprised of previously written songs into a story or even her own songs, new or old (well, hopefully old at this point). I just want to see her do something fascinating again. She used to be the queen of reinvention.

"As for Madonna, she could call her album "Dungpile" and it would go platinum simply because it's Madonna."

Not any more. "American Life" was her lowest selling album and did not sell a million copies.

Oddly enough, I think "Wicked" is just about to be certified Platinum, so actually Wicked will have outsold the last Madonna album.

Wrong, joekv--American Life is certified Platinum. Every single Madonna album has gone platinum, usually multi.

I am amazed at the criticism of her newer work, when Ray of Light (being a newer work) is one of her most critically acclaimed albums (and my personal fave of hers).

Did I find American Life hard to get into at first? Yes. I did. It was a new sound for Madonna (who does indeed continue to reinvent). But, once I gave it a couple of listens, I realized how good the album truly is. It is not a pop/radio friendly album. And good for Madonna to take risks. Like Erotica, which is just recently being relooked at as a good album despite its bad reviews in 92, American Life will age well.

But, yes, the next album is supposedly designed to be more pop/radio friendly.

I gave American Life three or four listens. I tried to like it. Jarico and I listened to it on the drive from Madrid to Barcelona. He didn't like it either. We both found it boring. Ray of Light is not my favorite (it was a new sound for her, but not a "new" sound), but it was much better than American Life. It's possible that some people like it and some don't. Just like everything else in the world.

I thought pretty much all of the songs on American Life were decent, but I didn't feel like anything was amazing. It felt like she was trying to tap into the popularity of rap & parody it at the same time with the title song, but it didn't work. Also, while it had a message, it wasn't a particularly deep song. I don't feel like she re-invented anything on the last album. I do think Ray of Light was great, though.

I fully get, Matt, that not everyone likes everything, etc. I also get that I have the right on a message board to debate and fight for my pov. re: Madonna's 'Wicked' New Album Title...

What is old and boring is the way things glide from a sincere opinion to nastiness on this board. Or the way some people have to harp on things. This thread wasn't even about American Life, but golly gee, we sure do need to bring it up to "prove" that Madonna is irrelevant. Despite her having the biggest selling tour of last year. Despite her still having a solid fan base in spite of poor reviews--and that not everyone agrees with said reviews. Despite the fact that if she really were tired and irrelevant, she wouldn't be harped on by some of you now would she? I don't see anyone harping on Tiffany, Rick Astley, Milli Vanilli, etc--people who really are washed up.

jrb - You don't need to fight for you pov, of course have the right to express it. I was just commenting that you were amazed there was criticism. Everything is criticized on this board, so American Life should not be that surprising. I really don't have anything against "Madonna" per se, I just don't like her post 1990 material as much as her 80s stuff. There are a few songs here and there that are cool, but nothing that's made a lasting impression on me personally. I know she likes to be controversial, but I don't think American Life made the impact she was hoping for. Or maybe it was a big deal and I just didn't hear much about it other than the brief media flurry about the music video and the lip-sync tour controversy (not to mention the Kabbalah thing happening *just* before the start of her tour). Madonna is smart enough to have become one of the most powerful women in the music industry EVER, so who cares if I like her CD or not, she's still a gazillionaire who could record the Honeycomb theme song and still sell a million copies. You gotta respect her business savvy if nothing else.

Rick Astley, he was such a hottie back in the day...

First off, I'm sure it's either a rumour or a total coincidence. Let's be clear, the term "Defying Gravity" was NOT invented by Schwartz(sp) and most definitely not by Mentzel. Also, to the person who wondered how it could be possible for Madonna to not know about Wicked when Spears and Moore did, well, do I really have to point out the fact that Madonna is pushing 50 and the other two are barely 30? Wicked generally isn't a show which makes crazed fans of the over 40 crowd.
