"finch requires more of a range than one would think"

I concur! I just finnished this show and there is quite a range if the actor can manage it. It is not necesary, but it is there.

"Wow BroadwayGirl, I couldn't disagree more. I hate it that people regard subtle, natural, classy and great acting as easy. It's Lithgow's job to make it look easy...so he would be glad that you liked him . "

I never regarded what he does as far as acting as easy. Quite the opposite, actually. It requires great acting, but was this thread not about roles that require lots of personality and a great actor rather than a great singer?

I can't believe no one has mentioned Cervantes/Quixote in Man of La Mancha - if I can sing it - it can't be very range-y...and I've played the role 3 times and understudied it twice...

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Not at all - I don't have a very big range - I'm basically a Bass/Baritone who generally sings up to about an F. Maybe it's just my way of thinking -but that doesn't seem like a very wide range to me. And Quixote is very easy for me to sing.

Roles can be difficult to sing without being rangy, I think. Max Bialystock, for example, doesn't have a huge range to sing, but whoever plays him has to have phenomenal endurance.

Marvin from FALSETTOS/IN TROUSERS. You don't have to be a fabulous singer to pull it off.

About the Sweeney thing. yes it requires a fantastic singer, but the range thing isn't an issue, when we are talking highnotes. I believe he only reaches an F sustained. I'm a baritone who is 15, and I can't sing very high, but I can hit all of his notes.

I have to disagree with Fiyero and Boq not calling for large ranges. Fiyero reaches a B flat in as Long as You're Mine, and Boq has to be belting an A flat when he sings "because you are so beautiful."

Of course then there's the role of the Mute in The Fantasticks.

Agreed: stay away from Wicked!!

Sometimes, even Chris Fitzgerald can't hit his notes. And NLB is an alien with a crazy range.

Beware of the Schwartz! Run! Runnnnnnnn!
