'Mama Mia' For Christmas! Dec 16th DVD Release

Universal have announced that the DVD of the smash hit movie 'Mama Mia' will be released in widescreen and full screen formats together with a two disc special edition just in time to make millions on Dec 16th. Special features are still being finalized.

I thought the DVD was being released in the US around Thanksgiving time.

They have changed the release date twice now.

Nope. The North American release date was pushed back to December 16, 2008. The UK is still getting the DVD on November 24, 2008. Australia gets the standard DVD this coming Tuesday November 4, 2008... they get the Blu-ray version on December 3, 2008.

The single-disc DVD (either Fullscreen or Widescreen) will only have: the sing-along, deleted musical number ("The Name of the Game") and director audio commentary.

Both the 2-disc Widescreen Special Edition DVD and Blu-ray disc contain a digital copy of the film (hence the 2nd disc).

It was speculated that the DVD was being released in the US alongside with the UK release date: November 24 for the UK and November 25 for the US. This is always the case with UK and US release dates -- they are always day-to-day. Over a month ago Universal chose to delay the US release date to December 16, hence why they delayed in releasing any form of Press Release until now.

Releases of US and UK DVDs are certainly not always on the day to day as you state. Many releases end up being weeks or in most cases months apart.
The movie is still showing in British cinemas 4 times a day nearly 4 months after it opened. This is unheard of these days even with big movies like 'Harry Potter' and its at least 10/ 15 years since a movie stayed in cinemas longer than 4 to 5 weeks.
The 'singalong' version of the movie in cinemas has added to its weekly popularity here with those screenings sold out a few days in advance. Updated On: 10/30/08 at 12:10 PM

MAMMA MIA! arrives on DVD in the UK on Monday November 24, 2008.
MAMMA MIA! arrives on DVD in the US on Tuesday December 16, 2008.

Period.

I am SO excited!!! I really enjoyed the movie (don't hate me!) I saw it 4 times...hahaha. My mother was dreading it and I dragged her to it and we had a blast. She ended up seeing it with some of her girlfriends when they were playing the sing a long version and said it was the most fun she'd had in a while. And just a question, why isn't Julie Walters on the cover of the single disc DVD?
