I met Vy a few years ago and she mentioned working on a movie...I assumed she meant praying one would be made, not actually working on one.
She was a doll, btw, and surprised at my knowledge of the show...I acted like I was meeting Sondheim or something...and gave my opinion of each Sister Carrie...made a fool of meself.

Posted: 4/24/07 at 2:33pmThe NY cast album is out of print, and may never have been released on cd (I have the album) but there is a London cast recording with Chaka Khan on cd, tho it may be out of print as well.

Same with us, along with about 20 other commercials.
I was the best "Mandy Patinkin in Evita commercial" in the neighborhood. And "best male in the neighborhood on "Daddy, Won't You Please Come Home" from the Eubie commercial".

The song is driving me crazy now - I'm dying to hear it again. The show must have been awesome - too bad the parents were 1) too cheap and 2) too scared to take us to Harlem to see it!
A little OT - was "Maybe" from Annie ever used in a commercial for animal adoption? I was listening to it today and at the end of the song where she goes, "Won't you please come get your BAAAAY - beeee", I could picture the animals in the cages, and then when the orphans come in and sing "Maybe" at the end, I could see lots of animals in the shot. It was so profound an image I swear I had seen an ad like this before. But if it hasn't been done yet, maybe Broadway Barks could produce it and they could show Andrea McCardle cuddling a cute cat or dog.

This is strange, but I think we have the same parents!
I kept pointing out to my church going parents that it was about a woman in church, but they weren't buying it.

Well here is some video footage of the show with its original star Desiree Coleman. I think Desiree was around the age of 16 here. After Mama I Want To Sing she went on to Bob Fosse's
BIG DEAL at the Broadway Theater. anyway check it out.

Well, Ciara might turn out to do well in the role. It's her first role so we don't have any indication of her acting. Now, she can take both acting and singing lessons and might knock it out the park. Nice that she's landed a leading role in a major motion picture her first time acting. Go Ciara. At least she's pretty to look at so people can't complain about looks. She's a big enough name to carry the lead without others to have to lure the crowd in.
Anyway here's a quote from her. She sounds pretty serious about it. We shall see.

"NEW YORK (AP) - As she prepares to film her first major movie role, Ciara remains calm. The hit-making singer, who will star in an adaptation of the gospel musical "Mama, I Want to Sing!" isn't nervous _ not now, at least.
"I don't want to claim the word `nervous' at all," Ciara, 21, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Friday. "I'm thinking, `Ciara's gonna go in, she's gonna go hard, she's gonna challenge herself, she's gonna knock it out.'"

Posted: 6/3/07 at 12:46amCiara acted in some random MTV cheerleading movie awhile back. She whispers her pop songs so I can't imagine her all of a sudden being able to belt out gospel songs.

Ciara!!!
Say it isn't so...she's got the name that will probably put young butts in cinema seats but the voice is practically non-existent. The producer(s) really lowered the bar this time.
