Awhile back, I said the Audra would be a great MAME. She has the charisma, the warmth, the voice, has proved she can dance in Shuffle Along, I am betting that she will get the comedy fine. So, now we have a number of viable candidates, including Audra, Sutton Foster, Amy Adams, Anne Hathaway, CZJ if she has the stamina to sing the songs night after night...all stars in the right age range.
Just need to get someone on with it.

i saw her in DC. After seeing her in Sweeney Todd, in which she was excellent, I had high hopes. SHE WAS TERRIBLE. She is not a MAME...she is a VERA and only if the person playing MAME is too old for the role. Believe me, for anyone who has seen a really good MAME (and there have been fewer of them than Dolly's), she would be a big disappointment. I think the problem was two-fold: (1) Mame is a warm character and she is not a warm personality; (2) her Vera was Harriet Harris, who was all wrong for the role. It really made a mess of every scene they did together. I am pretty sure that she is definitely too old for the role at this point. If they went that route, Donna Murphy would be my choice.
I also saw Christine Baranski in Mame at the Kennedy Center. I always have loved her performances. I was very disappointed. She was not a good choice for Mame. She would be perfection as Vera.
Megan Mullally
This is perfect for Toni Collette - a grand return to Broadway and musicals. And she's probably the greatest actress Hollywood and Broadway has to offer.

She would be a great Vera, methinks.
