All for Bernadette as Dolly!

Ummm...I think Megan Mullaly would be good, but she's a little too young.

Patti LuPone, I don't think, would be a good Dolly at all...I don't see that motherly quality Dolly needs in her. (I do think she's be a fantastic Mame or Vera though.)

How about a black Dolly? BRING BACK LESLIE UGGAMS!

Victoria Clark was a fantastic Dolly at Pittsburgh CLO this year. She would be a TERRIFIC Mame too.

On to Mame, as said, Clark and LuPone...not sure what I think of Christine Baranski.

Maria Friedman would be a dandy Mame!

Also, I think Marin Mazzie would be a terrific Mame, and maybe she'd finally get the Tony she's so deserving of.

On a side note, Cheno would be a FANTASTIC Gooch, but t'd never happen. Also, I think when (not if!) they're revived, Dolly will enjoy a niiice healthy run. Being such a well-known show, and seeing how recent revivals of other well-known classics have had VERY healthy lives (42nd Street, Fiddler) but Mame won't last as long. If it pulls good reviews, it might last as long as the Bernadette revival of Gypsy did, possible a bit longer.

My top three choices for Dolly have always been:
1. Ellen Greene
2. Bette Midler
3. Mary Testa
And I've recently wondered about Queen Latifah in a TV movie remake...

But, tO answer the original question, I do have to worry a little bit because both are such classic, beloved shows and I would hate to see them done just "sufficiently", with no real detail or heart. As long as Jerry Zaks doesn't direct I won't worry too much. I used to really enjoy his work ("Guys & Dolls", "Forum") but in the last few years he's managed to kill his credibility (with me and only me - not saying others feel the same!) with his productions of two of my favorite shows: "Little Shop" and "La Cage". Just my 2 cents.

Prediction:

Christine Baranski will not be in a revival of Mame on Broadway.

She does not have the voice for the role, and she wouldn't be enough of a draw for ticket sales to make up for her vocal inabilities.

I dunno 'bout you guys, but Carol Channing will always be Dolly in my opinion.

That's an OLD article. Cher is no longer attached to the telefilm of "Mame" according to Jerry Herman himself (he wants Catherine Zeta-Jones).

From Variety:

Jerry Herman, here for Goodspeed Musicals' revamped version of his "Mack and Mabel," gives an update on the long-gestating TV musical production of "Mame." Cher was supposed to star; then, at another juncture, Barbara Streisand's production company was going to do it.

"It's on indefinite hold and now it's up for grabs," says Herman, who nixed the Streisand project. According to the songwriter, he took one look at an early version of the script that had Streisand taking some of the big chorus numbers and turning them into solo spots. "She took 'It's Today' and made it into a solo," reports Herman. "A solo? It's a party song. I don't want to go into it."

Herman does want to talk about his current dream choice for the role. "What would you say to Catherine Zeta-Jones as Mame?" he wonders out loud. "She's funny and she's a real musical lady. I think it would be phenomenal."

Hello Dolly will revive in the West End if it does. The director of The Phildelphia Story is keen direct this revival. Hello Dolly! hasnt been done in the West End for a good 20 years

I would see a Mame revival first...but only because I saw it today at the Bucks COunty Playhouse. Go read my review on it! And I 2nd, or is it 3rd now? the motion on Bernadette as Dolly =D

I would love to see Bette Midler take on "Dolly", but it's doubtful she'll ever return to Broadway in a musical. I'd also love to see Donna Murphy take on the role of Mame and Harriet Harris as her Vera Charles.
