It's a rush, not a lottery so whether you are able to get rush tickets is largely within your control. It's really a question of how early you are willing to get there and how long you are willing to wait to improve your chances. Check the rush report on BroadwaySpotted the 2 weeks before you are going and that will give you some idea of how early you need to get there."

I see the % of chance of getting tickets, but any idea how many they give out as rush?

"It varies by show and I don't know what Mamma Mia does but as a general rule, it's usually at least 20 tickets and sometimes more sold as rush, so depending on how many people are in front of you and how many of them are buying 1 ticket versus 2, you can assume if you are among the first 10-12 in line, you stand a very decent chance of getting them. Beyond that, it's a crapshoot. "

Thanks. That helps. We're staying in a nearby hotel so we'll hang out in the area so I can line up by 9:15am or 9:30am. I'm assuming if buying 2 tickets, that we don't both need to be there.

"No, you both don't need to be there. But just FYI based on my experience, if there are 43 in line at 9:45, there were probably at least 30-35 at 9:15 or 9:30. If the numbers continue to be that high, you should be thinking 7:30 or 8, not 9:15 or 9:30 if you want to make sure you have a good chance. It's a pain but that's the price for wanting to grab super cheap tickets."

Cool. Appreciate the info. I'm not from NY so have no idea how this rush things works (and don't remember hearing about it in the past....only lottery...so am guessing it's fairly new)

I do their rush all the time and I've never had them ask for my ID, nor have I seen anyone get asked :)

Wow...that would be pretty amazing. Love love to be there (but am travelling to NY labor day weekend so a couple weeks too early). Can imagine that show would be hard to get (and even same thing for the last show of any long running show that is closing)

Thanks for the tip about verifying it is not student rush as I surely wouldn't want to waste my time. We are coming in the Thursday (trying for Fri night rush) so can stop by the theater on Thurs and ask.

Would I have a better chance for a Saturday night vs a Friday night? This surprises me but when I look at the recent Broadway Spotted Rush report for Mamma Mia it states:
"Weekdays: 20 people in line at 9:35 AM. First person in line at 8:00 AM. Weekends: 7 people in line at 9:30 AM."

But not sure if they are referring to Sat or Sun night. (The reports themselves seem to come out Sunday nights)"

It's very unpredictable. Sometimes when shows are closing, it brings in larger crowds to the rush line.

I wouldn't really rely on the rush report as it's not always accurate, especially being that theres no way to prove they send someone every day to each show to count people on line.

Mamma Mia does not have performances on Sunday's; they're dark.

I rushed last thursday's matinee, I got there at 9AM and there were 23 people in front of me already, I got the last ticket. (People were rushing for both the matinee and the 8PM show, so have that in mind).

Also, it is general rush, I didn't have to show an ID and there were many non-students buying tickets.

I just need to figure out which one has better luck as we don't have a ton of time in NY and don't want to hold back my family from doing other things while I'm in line."

I did Mamma Mia's rush this morning. I got to the box office at 8am and was first on line but by 8:30 there were about 14 people behind me. I was shocked! By the time they opened, the line was almost at the Majestic!

Granted, there were 2 shows today so it might not be a good indication of what a Friday or Saturday would look like.

What I did learn / notice:

A Shubert employee who works at the theater told me that yesterday they only gave about 4 rush tickets.

Most of the partial view seats around me weren't occupied by people I saw in the rush line, but, by people who paid $70 in advance. I'm not sure how many tickets they ended up giving but I noticed the front box on the other side of the theater was occupied by 2 people from the rush line as well, and the 8 box seats behind them were not people from the line in the morning. I was given Orchestra row C seats 14 and 16.

They were actually horrible seats, LOL! But, I've seen the show so many times and I only paid $32 so I can't complain.

and no, I mean that there were only about 4 rush seats yesterday. Meaning, out of all the people waiting on line, they only sold 4 seats for $32 and that was it. Which relates to my other comment about people sitting around me who paid $70. If they can sell the seats for $70 online or at the box office they will. Then, on the day of the performance, they will sell whatever "rush seats" that are left for $32.
