Wow! One of the big ones going down. Always a momentous time. Not a fan of the show myself, but that sucks for all the people losing their jobs. I wonder what will go into the Broadhurst now (one of the 3 theatres in which I've never seen a show)
Good riddance to bad rubbish. Hopefully theatre-going audiences will now choose to spend their money supporting shows with original scores.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Tell that to the tourist crowd theater going audience that is most likely 90% of Broadway's customers. I think there is room for a good mix of original and jukebox musicals! Just my opinion.
It's been interesting seeing the numbers over the past year or so since it moved to the Broadhurst. One would think that moving to a smaller house would result in more full houses, but instead was way up and down through the year.
It appears that, although it's a well-known title, it really benefitted by the big marquee on Broadway and when it moved to the less-obvious Broadhurst, it dropped off many tourists' radar.

It wasn't doing great at the Winter Garden before it moved but youre right that the move didn't really benefit the show at all.
I can't say I am 100% surprised, but I will say congratulations for such an amazing run. That being said, I'm now putting money that fiddler will take the broadhurst

I reckon Fiddler will go to the Imperial and a play takes the Broadhurst like King Charles III unless this new production of Fiddler is smaller in scale.
I don't know. Broadhurst is more of a play venue. They have done musicals in there before and will continue, but I have a feeling that a play will go there.

Sad, but I agree it's time. I really enjoy the show for what it is (fluffy fun) and will try to make a last visit (I saw once it like 5 years ago on tour) to say goodbye. As for what's next, my guess: Misery.
