Mamma Who Bore Me (Reprise) on Tour

Did anyone notice on the video that it sounded different, and kind of sucks.

The video's sound quality is really off. It is much, much better live. I don't know why it sounds like that. Trust me, that's not indicative of the live performance at all.

Seriously!? Hearing the tour cast on youtube or whtever is SO different than seeing them live! If you have not seen them in person then you are really missing out! The tour cast, has the talent, passion and camaraderie to pull you into the show night after night! And yes I can say that, having seen them 3 nights while they were in Oregon!

Can people understand that online videos are NOT the best representation of the quality of the actual performance?

Millie: I am not certain that people are talking about the quality of the video. The actual musical arrangement of the song sounds different.
I can't say that it is or isn't.
It just sounds weird. If it is a video/sound quality issue fine. Regardless, it sounds different.

Having just seen the tour in LA I can assure you the cast is excellent - every one of them.
Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!

I agree that the arrangement sounds different, although it may just be because the tempo also seems to be slower.

As for the quality...well...if that video was the only exposure I'd had to Spring Awakening I would not go see it. But, I do enjoy the show, so I'll reserve judgment on the performance itself until after the tour comes to Chicago (oy, next August is so far away).

Oooo, I do love a "you rubes not in NY have no idea what you're missing" thread.

re: Mamma Who Bore Me (Reprise) on Tour

Of course everything sounds different/better live...but I've heard over 6 versions of this reprise and it all sounds the same. It can't change THAT much. The problem is Wendla not singing in a strong enough mix/belt, imo.

re: Mamma Who Bore Me (Reprise) on Tour

I'm pretty sure when they recorded the song (I heard that it was in Seattle) that Christy Altomare, Sarah Hunt and I don't know if it was Gabby Garza or Kimiko Glenn that wasn't there.

It was Claire Sparks, Julie Benko and Krystina Alabado singing the reprise for three of the girls that were not there.

re: Mamma Who Bore Me (Reprise) on Tour

Preface: I'm not saying that it sounded terrible by any means, because I think the sound quality on that recording trumps what the song sounded like if you were there. However...

...regardless of if it was the regular girls or swings/understudies in the recording, there should be a more consistent sound. Otherwise I don't see a huge point in even having understudies---my impression has always been that if you are filling in for someone you should give a performace as up to par if not better than the one people came expecting to see. Audiences, especially audiences who see tours, don't shell out $80+ for orchestra seats to see a poorer-quality show than what has been advertised for Broadway and/or the tour, not just for SA but any show.

antonijan, what you did was childish and very rude. I was not expecting for that to show up and I was not in an a place where that was appropriate when I clicked on your link, I do NOT permit that in my thread and kindly request that you erase your link.

ANYWAYS:

I was not at all talking about the cast if that was the impression, they sound just fine.
I was commenting on the crappy arrangement.

I am hoping antonijan did not realize what the link was, or perhaps confused links while posting.

Because, if that was intentional, well, then I hope Karma comes back on you.

re: Mamma Who Bore Me (Reprise) on Tour

There's a video of them singing it acapella on the TotallyTrucked YouTube page, and I think they do a pretty damn good job. While Steffi's voice isn't as strong or distinctive as Lauren's was, it still sounds amazing. Especially their Anna.

re: Mamma Who Bore Me (Reprise) on Tour

Woot! I went to school with Gabby Garza, who plays Anna. Very proud of her.

However, the recording, I think, is just a victim of bad sound mixing and recording. The performance is not necessarily awful but the quality of the recording is. That's all.
