I was on the rush line for Rotten when this happened; got there at 8:35. I heard a lot of sirens and stuff but that's normal for Manhattan. From there, I walked over to Bright Star. When I was waiting on line to buy a ticket, I was talking with the woman behind me. She asked if I heard what happened and I said no. She then told me she was sitting on her balcony of the pearl hotel (49th/8th) and she heard the gunshots. She said there were 8 that she counted and when she looked over the balcony she saw a man lying on the ground dead. She said it was the most horrific scene. I think she said she left her hotel around 9am and by then cops were swarming the area. How scary though - stuff like this can happen anywhere. I'm glad not many innocent people were harmed!

Supposed it did not. Many times these options were tried to no avail and the officer wound up paying the price. I love Monday Morning Quarterbacks who have never been put in a position of making a split second life or death decision. You have to be out of your mind to be a cop in this city and country. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

This is the latest (and probably final) report on this story, considering all the other awful things that happened in NYC and around the world last night. He was being aggressive, hurt a woman, and would not put the gun down, and charged at cops. Nothing about mental illness or him being a stagehand mentioned. I'm glad no police or other people were seriously injured.

He didn't hurt the woman, nor did he have a gun. She was grazed by the bullet from the cops. The man had a knife. Did you even read the article?

Margo/Sutton/Hamilton/Everlast -- He tried to attack the police officer. He did not attack any woman.

Statement from IATSE Local One President:
From President Claffey:
May 19, 2016
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I believe it's necessary to address the false news reports regarding yesterday's tragic shooting of our brother member Garry Conrad. While the union was in contact with the NYPD to provide next of kin information and confirmation of membership for Brother Conrad- the press never sought union confirmation of any additional information that was inaccurately reported on television and likely in today's newspapers. While the loss of life for this brother and his family is tragic in itself, nobody truly knows or condones all the facts of the troubles that our member was experiencing yesterday. It does need to be clarified however, that contrary to news reports, Brother Conrad was not employed yesterday at The Eugene O'Neill Theater and hasn't been employed there for many years. In turn, he was not advised to exit The O'Neill Theater yesterday for any reason, because again he was not employed there. It should be noted that a man offering much of this incorrect information to the press while "claiming to be a stagehand at The Gershwin Theater" is totally false. He is not a member of The Gershwin Crew, Local One or the IATSE, and is certainly not a reflection of our unions honor. The union does have information that he has only worked "a handful of calls" in our jurisdiction. I am frankly appalled as you likely are with the false information this man provided the press to achieve a few minutes of television air time while our brother member laid dead in the street. It is inexcusable. Be assured I have made every attempt to contact the press to correct the false information and the police department was notified as well.
Regardless of the circumstances, please join the union in extending our deepest sympathies to the family of our fallen brother Garry Conrad, while also offering our sincere respect to those police officers of the NYPD, who obviously had to make an extremely difficult decision in the performance of their duties to protect the public and themselves for their own families.
Respectfully,
James J. Claffey, Jr.

To make matters worse, right wing trolls on twitter are posting the picture and saying he was a muslim attacking police officers, and trying to make it a political issue. smh

Hi I'm not sure if it was mentioned and I'm no expert, But I believe that many law enforcement weapons shoot multiple bullets with one trigger pull. One trigger from two officers can equal to 10-12 bullets. Also I believe they are trained to hit at the center of the body to prevent stray bullets or bullets ricocheting of surrounding areas. In a crowded street, and when force is used aiming for a suspect center is safer for the bystanders. Also keep in mind that most officers on the job can go their entire career having never needed to use lethal force.
