The way you (and the media) worded this is so misleading, and automatically creates the assumption that the police did something wrong. He was attacking people with a knife, and was therefore shot in order to protect other civilians. It should say something like "Knife Wielding stagehand shot after attacking person" or something of that nature.

I live about 7 blocks away, and read numerous reports all day, but none of them mentioned the "stagehand angle", until I read your link. Horrible. Coulda been a lot worse....We, who work in the theatre often have coffee between shows, in the front part of this store. Scary. Of course, random stuff like this could happen anywhere, at any time.

IT matters that the OP messed up every aspect of this news report. A) person was not a stagehand. B) Placed the cop shooting as the main part of it, creating an assumption that they did something wrong. As if cops don't have to deal with enough problems nowadays.

@z5-I think you are reading a lot into the OP as well as the media reports. And I'm not sure what your point about BOM is-first, as stated, it's irrelevant and secondly what the article says is that he is a stagehand working on BOM through a subcontractor. What's your issue here?

My sole is issue is how by the topic sentence, it makes the cops seem guilty based on the shooting, and automatically can bring in negative connotations towards the officer that was involved in the situation.

Yes, true, Z, however it was ABC news that misreported, not the OP. The OP just posted the link. Local NYC media reports much earlier in the day did not indicate that the police were at fault in any way. In fact, a coupla articles that quoted eyewitnesses, that the cop started crying immediately after. Sad, all around. Rush hour, Food Emporium supermarket on an very busy street.

You mean the man shot by the police? Yes, he was a stagehand. A very sad situation. The press is a bit out of control. Initially, they said he had stabbed the tourist. Now it appears she was accidently shot by the police. Also, they keep talking about and 8 inch knife, making it sound like some monstrous hunting knife, when it was only a 3 1/2 to four inch blade - still capable of lethal force, but why exaggerate?
So much rushing to judgement on both sides to get the story out.

How would you know since, I assume, you weren't there?
It has been reported, in every single news outlet, that he was ordered to drop the knife and did not. Obviously, that's how he got killed. That's all we need to know.

You don't have to assume I wasn't there, as I told you quite plainly in the post of mine that you are responding to that I was not. I know the size of the blade because there is a photo of the knife, next to a traffic cone for scale (warning, there is a graphic photo of the deceased in the link). It is a Spyderco (or a spyderco knockoff), a very common tool for stagehands to carry. The blades for a spyderco are 3 1/2 to 4 inches.

Again, that's all you need to know, but I'd like to wait until all the facts come out, especially since there were so many errors in the initial reporting. This was probably a justified shooting, and there is said to be a recording of the incident that will likely verify that.
Beyond that, was there any way to avoid the shooting? Did he have an underlying mental illness that could have been diagnosed and treated, avoiding the situation altogether? Is there something to be learned here to avoid such situations in the future?
It hasn't even been 24 hours. Do you truly think that there is nothing more we need to know?

How is it misleading? How does it make it seem like the cops had a choice? How does it make the police look bad? Police shooting someone, even when it was 100% the right thing to do, is a big story. No one is demonizing the cops here. What should the headline be? The cops shot and killed someone who was attacking people. That's the story.

He fired 9 bullets at the man... Wonder if that was necessary if his intention was to decapacitate him as opposed to making sure he was 100% dead. And it's a pretty busy street! I wish the situation could be better handled.

Margo 319, a little respect, please. Not for me, but for the man who died a horrible public death, and for the traumatized officer who it seems was forced to kill him, something he will have to deal with for the rest of his life. Also consider the woman who was injured, and the witnesses who ran for their lives - not from a knife, but from gunfire - and will always remember that awful day.
In the BWW "censorship" thread, I politely requested that you stop repeatedly quoting me in an attempt to use me as a weapon to personally attack PalJoey. Because of that, you have chosen to use this tragedy in a petty and personal way by throwing those words back into my face here.
Please don't use this tragedy that way. Troll about a show or just about anything else, really.
But not about this. It isn't right or decent to have a flame war over such a terrible incident.
Since when is more information a bad thing, anyway? In a situation like this, there is no such thing as knowing all we need to know. We should strive to garner more information so we can understand what went wrong here, on all levels - so we can learn why such tragedies occur and how to avoid them.

A friend of mine was staying in a hotel very close to where the incident occurred. Very scary indeed. Reading things like this make me feel sick to my stomach.

I find it interesting that I know small women (5 feet, 120 pounds) who have taken blades of the same size away MULTIPLE TIMES from their FULLY GROWN 17 year old male students at some of the most severe autistic high schools in my area. But somehow these 6'2" 220 pound cops find that lethal force is the answer.
RIP to the man who was shot. You deserved help (I'm assuming he was mentally ill), not to be put in a grave at age 46.

Your post is the reason we have so many issues in society. You rush to judgement by assuming that lethal force was not the only viable option. You also assume the victim/suspect had mental health issues when no evidence has been presented to even suggest that. Can we just all take a calm breath, slow down and wait until all of the facts come out? I blame social media for this need to know every single little detail before the body is even cold. Jesus!
Also, you're comparing apples to oranges. There is just no comparable scenario... especially yours. Furthermore, I'd love to know where you come up with the height and weight of the police officers involved in this altercation. That's incredible detective work!

Cops are armed with pepper spray and batons as well as guns. The article states the cop and man got very close at one point. A shot of pepper spray to the man's face should've stunned him long enough to take the knife away. Two-three hits to the legs with the baton should've made him stay down long enough to take the knife away. Why is the story always there were no options? It's very hard to believe.

I was on the rush line for Rotten when this happened; got there at 8:35. I heard a lot of sirens and stuff but that's normal for Manhattan. From there, I walked over to Bright Star. When I was waiting on line to buy a ticket, I was talking with the woman behind me. She asked if I heard what happened and I said no. She then told me she was sitting on her balcony of the pearl hotel (49th/8th) and she heard the gunshots. She said there were 8 that she counted and when she looked over the balcony she saw a man lying on the ground dead. She said it was the most horrific scene. I think she said she left her hotel around 9am and by then cops were swarming the area. How scary though - stuff like this can happen anywhere. I'm glad not many innocent people were harmed!
