Posted: 5/29/05 at 7:59pmObviously, the producers have no problem with it. It's their money, not yours, so why are you so concerned?
#27re: Maria Eberline as Elphaba?
Posted: 5/29/05 at 8:23pmBecause I'd like to see who i'm supposed to see...and furthermore, if they are paying one actress plus an understudy who i'm sure gets paid when she goes on....it just adds to the rising cost of theatre tickets. I'd rather the money be thrown into the show than into a Linda Muggleston situation. P.S. I love you Linda..sorry you had to go through all that business with "Wonderful Town."

Posted: 5/29/05 at 10:25pmI was under the impression that Block had a leg or foot injury, but I am curious as to whether she is referring to a vocal injury, as well. Although it's of course an unreliable indicator, she sounds like her chords are spewing blood all over the first row in all the recordings I've heard of her performance, particularly at the sitzprobe.

The day before the first preview of the tour in Toronto they decided to run Defying Gravity or No Good Deed right before they left for the night and I think instead of lowering her, they kept raising her due to a computer malfunction and she damaged her side I think, and was unable to perform until 3 weeks later. Kristy Cates played Elphaba during those three weeks and she still is on a limited schedule until she gets better.

Posted: 5/30/05 at 12:13amDoes she fly in No Good Deed? I think I read that somewhere but that is different than the Broadway.

She was hurt during NO good Deed, it was supposed to be that Elphaba flew in on her broom for the song instead of just wandering on stage...but they don't due the flying cuz of Steph's injury.
#1-if a performer takes off for no reason then they don't get paid, they are allowed 1 missed day a month with pay, any more are no pay. Stephanie was hurt ON THE JOB..i think she should be paid until she is better, it's not the same as losing your voice or breaking your leg on the street!

Posted: 5/30/05 at 2:11amI saw Maria Eberline as Elphaba on May 28th at the Matinee. I was totally prepared to see Stephanie and was extremely disspointed that i wouldn't see her. I had never seen the show before either. So not only was I unsure if i really liked the show, but now i was gonna get the u/s. I would have to say she has a different voice, but she definitely knows how to use it. Her Defying Gravity was amazing. I loved her, i've heard clips of a lot of other Elphaba's final notes of Defying and I think this girl is second only to Idina imo.

Posted: 5/30/05 at 4:45amJust to let you know the visual and the pain of the comment "spewing blood all over the audience" is disturbing. If Stephanie's injury is to her voice, sje definitely shouldn't be singing AT ALL! If it's just the hip thing then she should wait until fully healed so she won't hurt herself anymore, because I want to see her when she comes to Atlanta.

Again...please don't pretend like you know all and your opinion is the only one that matters. We're all entitled to opinions on this board and you don't have the final say.

I have never seen Wicked before and when I went I saw Maria Eberline, who was fantastic. She pulled the role off completely, she hit every note beautifully and was extremely convincing as Elphaba. I was disappointed to find out I was seeing the understudy, but it was so great, it didn't matter in the end. She really cared about her character and I felt like she put a unique spin on it from what i've heard. For anyone who is unsure about seeing Maria, don't be, she is absolutely breathtaking; great actress and singer. It was funny though because as I walked out of the theatre and turned the corner, I saw Stephanie J Block, just standing there, which I thought was weird. But I really loved the whole thing. Although Kendra's singing was bugging me, she was hysterical especially during Popular (don't look at me, don't!) and she really impressed me during the second act. And someone I don't think got enough credit was Logan Lipton, he was so funny and lovable. And the Wizard, he was great! The whole thing was, but yeah, thats my spin on Maria plus some other stuff

Posted: 6/10/05 at 10:21amMaria Eberline is GREAT and VERY sweet. I met her (with Glinda understudies and David Stone the producer) and she was VERY gracious and nice and talked to me for a little while. She's a fairly good Elphaba. She kind of reminds me of someone who would be great as Narrator in Joseph.

Posted: 6/10/05 at 6:32pmIf she got hurt on the job then she should most def. get paid her full salary. Wouldn't it be like that at any job? I mean if it happened where you worked and it was there fault...

Listen:
Stephanie was chosen to be Elphaba on her talent. She got hurt. The producers, I'm sure, decided with her and her doctors to put her on limited schedule.
If you know about it, the producers know about it. Therefore, she's not just skipping performances at the spur of the moment. There's a method.
P.S. Princeton - the acting profession is different than a regular full time job. If you get hurt, it's easy to get rid of you. If an actor gets hurt, equity gets involved and contracts are discussed. And they are replacing her part-time with her understudy or standby.
#41re: Maria Eberline as Elphaba?
Posted: 6/10/05 at 6:55pmI'm sure not only is the production team paying all her medical bills and her full salary, I would imagine they have thrown another penny or two her way on top of that. She'd probably have grounds for a negligence lawsuit if she felt so inclined.
#42re: Maria Eberline as Elphaba?
Posted: 6/10/05 at 11:00pmMaria Eberline goes on most of the time right? It seems that everyone who has seen the understudy almost always sees Maria rather than Jenna, but I guess it makes sense because they would need to get the understudy for Nessa as well if Jenna were to go on.

Posted: 6/11/05 at 12:48amIsn't this thread supposed to be about Maria Eberline, not Stephanie J Block's accident?
#44re: Maria Eberline as Elphaba?
Posted: 6/11/05 at 12:50amI guess Maria understudies for both Elphaba and Nessarose when the time comes
#45re: Maria Eberline as Elphaba?
Posted: 6/11/05 at 4:47pmSorry, but I cannot remember who said this. Isn't there something dealing with Equity that each understudy has to have a certain amount of production in the understudied role? Jenna, is seems, went on as a replacement religiously in the beginning of the tour. I suppose now Maria Eberline is getting her time in? Thanks for letting us know that she is competant and moreover impressive.

I don't know what day you're going, or if you have yet, but I saw it last night in Hollywood (June 26th) and Maria had her strong points, but overall was not as impressive as I expected the understudy to be.
Her acting was much better than Idina's, and she has a strong voice, but so much of her singing and her vocal acting was not what it should be. It made so many of the songs cheesy and she did it so differently that it changed the tone of the songs and lyrics.
I do have to admit, though, that I teared up during Defying Gravity -- which is not something Idina was able to make me do.
I give her a 2.5 out of 5.
