Mariah Carey Continues Broadway Plans

This will never happen. Maybe a TV movie on some remote channel hidden far far in the depths of the country, but never Broadway.

You wish! The big company she's talking about is probably Universal and believe me, after Wicked, they feel they have wings! I personally don't think she's the greatest singer who ever lived... she could be a really good singer if only she could stop with the vocal acrobatics and try to convey emotion through her voice but then noone would say she's "impressive", they'd just say she's a good singer and where is the glory in that, right?

As for her five octave range, please... her highest octaves is not sung, it's nasal whistling... it probably works on dogs but it makes me wish I was deaf!
She's also a terrible actress but if that means Universal is going to make more bucks on kiddies, count on it... it WILL happen!

where is Broadway going?!

Once, I lost the garage door opener. I played one of her songs, and when she hit the high notes, my garage door opened right up...

Oh, and the neighbors dog went nuts.

You think her voice has gone? Well just watch / listen to this...

This was sung during her last tour. Wow! Would love to hear Shoshana and Idina hit those notes, I don't think so.

"I'm so over her and her 'ghetto' she believes she's from. Last I looked, she was a white girl from Long Island. Posing as a black girl from the projects."

ARE YOU INSANE! First, ghetto does not mean black! A white girl from long island can sure as hell be ghetto, I know a bunch of them. As for saying she is a white girl, you are wrong. If she says she is black, hispanic, asian or whatever she can. You have no right to say she is posing as a black girl.

"You think her voice has gone?"

Yes, I do. Whistle notes are fine if they are just embelishments on otherwise good singing. But whistle notes alone do not make a good singer. It's more impressive to have a consistent, high, healthy pop belt, which Mariah does not.

ok, I used the wrong word. 'Ghetto' is not exactly it.

But the point I am trying to make is that Mariah Carey has spent most of her time posing as someone that she is not. Every interview, every speech, every appearance...she gives off this arrogant air and faceless expression but is always looking like she has to pose for a camera,..as opposed to just getting real and speaking (or singing) for that matter from the heart. I'd rather listen to artists that aren't technically perfect, but have something to say because they mean it, and it expresses the times we're in, or it trailblazes in so many other artistic ways..and not a Mariah Carey,..who comes across as fake and weaker than 2ply cardboard paper as they come.
and not to mention packing her hefty cellulite self into these tight dresses with her fake breasts waiting to explode. WHo and WHAT is she trying to prove? If she were to TRULY use her voice by working on some classics, standards or something breakthru (like a Christina Aguilera who is coming out with a 20's-40's album next month----that's ballsy...but artistic)(or Madonna, whose albums change every single year from R&b, to Sondheim, to Electronica, to Folk music,..and now Disco).

I just can't take Mariah's persona. she is as irritating and false as they come...and her voice isn't just as good and pure as it used to be when she first started. She never has anything to say...with her music or her videos. All her videos are careful closeups of her face standing in some sort of body of water,..whether its a lake, a beach, a pool, or bathing in a dirty bathtub. It's time to get out of that dirty bathtub and get real and add some depth to her work. She just pisses me off. And her on Broadway (getting back to topic) stay is as repulsive as ever. She needs to go.

I once read that she can sing eight octaves. I'm not even sure that that's humanly possible.

Whoever wrote her top note was a soprano F is insane. She goes SIGNIFICANTLY higher than that. If you're talking "Queen of the Night" F, she has performed live 2 octaves above that and more. If you mean she belts to top of the staff F, you are also incorrect. She has belted high A's on albums, and belts high G's and Ab's still.

8 octaves? No.

6 is probably closer to the truth (if you include the whistle tone).

I'd love to be able to belt soprano F. That's one heck of a range.

Lets remember, Mariah did have nodes.

You can still hear the affect they had on her voice. It hasn't quite been the same.

#41re: Mariah Carey Continues Broadway Plans

My impression of her is that she started as an immature, unpolished, minimally articulate person when she met Tommy Mottola. But that voice, and that bod! (not now....then). And so he took over her life and every word out of her mouth and every move that she made was orchestrated by him or Sony Music executives. And when her marriage to him ended, and her relationship with Sony Music ended, Mariah was left on her own and probably had a very unclear idea of who she really was. I think what we see now is still someone who is very much trying to figure that out. She just tries so hard instead of just being. For her particular fans - the ones who buy her records - all she really needs to do is "be". She can live the fantasy that she'll do Broadway, because she has enough power to make this happen. If it's an actual musical play, I don't have faith that it would last more than a week. But I think she could put on a sell-out series of concerts on Broadway over the holidays and do really well.

I don't give a darn if she comes to Broadway or not. The possibility is real if only because she has more money than you can imagine and money, NOT worthiness, talks in the business of entertainment. That being said, we ("we" being all who worked in the music business back in the 90's), knew she was not to be booked on any shows and "allowed" to do anything but sing. She is one of the most inarticulate people in the entire business and all of Sony knew that. She was the bosses' squeeze and she was to be handled in a very specific way. Now, left to her own devices, she has NO concept of, well, just about anything and the one thing she did have, (again, past tense) was a voice, which is SHOT.

It's incredible she had the comeback she did, but that only goes to show you just how mediocre the "Britney spears',J-lo's" of the world are. the public is DYING for anything resembling talent and even with half her range and ill fitting clothing and being completely emotionally stunted in all her "Hello Kitty glory", she's got more talent in one fake boob than most of the rest of pop student body (Jessica simpson, et al), have, put together. That is the sad reality.

That's bollocks, she is not inarticulate. She writes her own lyrics, some of which are very expressive and have touched people on many levels. You've just got to read the inspirational lyrics to Hero, Reflections, Through the Rain etc.
You're just bitter, that it's not Sony raking in the cash that she is making now.
So what if some of her clothes are shorter than they should be and that she has an obsession with Hello Kitty, her youth was spent in the music business living as a grown up now she has her independence she is discovering who she really is.
I personally can't wait for her Broadway show, it will be fantastic.
If you don't like her or her voice; it's simple, don't go to see it.

Angus, you're entire post is "bollocks" and clearly, you didn't comprehend my post about Carey. I am a staunch fan, I am however stating facts as opposed to blinded fan hyperbole. But you wouldn't know that now would you, as you're one of "those fans".

As for being bitter, I don't work at Sony and could care less about their bottom line and trust me, they get a piece of her $$ for life, so no one is crying for them, or her when it comes to finances.

Mariah Carey may be able to write lyrics, but that doesn't mean she's articulate. Articulate means to be able to converse intelligently with other people on a variety of subjects; and in the case of a celebrity, converse appropriately with the media. FYI, I worked for Sony Music in the 80's and early 90's. Like it or not, she's a star. There's an audience in this country for a lot of things I don't like. What about all the people who read trash tabloid newspapers? What about the Jerry Springer crowd? I don't understand anyone who doesn't understand Mariah's fame. She has an audience and could sell-out concerts on Broadway or any street.

I'm not a fan of mariah carey.. I use to like her in the early 90's, i thought she had a great voice.. but i think she screams a bit. And her voice is not what it use to be. Her head voice is very airy, and i based off of "Glitter," I can't see her as being that great of an actress, let alone broadway actress. I think a lot of these stars think that because they can tour, they can do broadway, but its way more difficult doing 8 shows a week. I wish her luck, and if she was smart, she'd find a voice teacher to help her out Asap!

Yes, but to "converse intelligently" you need to have a varied of vocabulary and be able to express yourself clearly, thus enabling your audience to access the information you are conveying. From reading and seeing her interviewed Mariah is more than capable of both of the above.
Anyway, the forum is designed to celebrate and discuss theatre, not personally attack performers' basic literacy skills.
