I hope you are not implying that count Axel von Fersén in any way resembles Cyrano? By the way for every musical about a count there are countless musicals about queens and strong female characters. Updated On: 2/22/07 at 10:34 PM

Hah ayeah I have a few videos of Takarazuka (they have two Rose of Versailles--one focusing on Marie and Fersen one on the new characters Oscar and Andre) and they're a lot of fun--but I'm a Japanes epop culture, girls manga/anime junkie so know the story well

"And the movie was absolutely boring."

See, I love movies, yet I get bored VERY easily if the movie is bad/not well made.

MARIE ANTOINETTE was one of the few movies last year that held my attention the entire time. It was very deliberately paced, sure, but I didn't find it slow at all.

See, I just found it ridiculously boring, and I LOVE 18th century France, and am fascinated by Marie Antoinette. Guess it's just different strokes for different folks, huh?

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

Copolla's Marie Antoinette was one of the BEST films of the year

And by BEST you mean the opposite, right?

No, by best he meant BEST.

The film was unfairly attacked when it first came out, and now, in hindsight, many are discovering that the film is a fantastic piece of cinema.

It's not your typical film, sure. You need to really know cinema to get it.

I get that it was from Marie Antoinette's perspective, but she wasn't completely clueless. For God's sake, Copolla didn't even include the whole necklace affair- which was the cause of her being accused of treason and her subsequent death.
The film in general was just boring- it focused too much on her alleged sex life, and ignored her mental growth from the time when she was 14 to 38.

It's not even supposed to be a biopic. It's a mood movie. And a marvelous one.

Saw it tonight. Didn't think it was all that great. It had compelling sequences but one of the best movies of the year? I saw movies with three times the imagination and half the budget this year.

On that note I've been reconnecting with The Rose of Versailles and even though it's a grossly fictionalized account of her life (while still managing to tell more of the story than Sophia's movie) I think it would make a pretty great source for a musical. I don't think Marie's all that interesting on her own, but when you concentrate on the people around her...
