Posted: 10/30/11 at 8:39amI'm not a fan of the show, but if I were the producer I'd want Guillermo del Toro to direct. Peter Jackson would be my second choice.

Posted: 10/30/11 at 9:48amdel Toro would be fantastic as would Jackson. And Besty is right - Whoever ends up directing this needs to understand that they're not making it to premiere on The Disney Channel after an all new episode of THE SUITE LIFE... I'm afriad though that it will end up being a G rated 3D Imax "experience" starring Rebecca Black and Demi Lovato.

Posted: 10/30/11 at 1:14pmi have a feeling that wont happen. The producers of WICKED are smart. I can see them going down the route of making this a darker musical. The set of the musical as it is now is pretty dark and gothic, as are the costumes. And yea, some elements of the story are light and bubbly but there are so many darker elements such as Government corruption, racism, animal abuse, scapegoats (March of the Witch Hunters I can see being very disturbing)

Posted: 10/30/11 at 3:13pmI am praying that they take a darker route with the film version. The musical itself should have been much much darker in my opinion. As a huge fan of the novel, I really think they show would have been much better if it had stayed more true to Maguire's novel. The musical did keep some of the darker aspects and undertones of the novel, but there is way too much "fluff" and fun that interferes with it though IMHO.

Posted: 10/30/11 at 3:16pm^I think they will go a bit darker for the reasons I posted above. Especially if Baz or someone like him does it. And I think Schwartz would be on board for that kind of tone anyway

I think they can take the existing material and make it darker in tone with only a few minor tweaks. For example, in the second act when the "townspeople" are hunting for Elphaba, they can open that up in a film and turn it into a real action scene, complete with torches and pitchforks, etc.
I just think the stage musical has been slowly slipping further and further into a tweener revue, mostly in the way it's acted. "Popular" has gotten so giggly now, it's almost psychotic. The two leads are played as junior high students rather than young college women struggling to find themselves and figure out who they are.
Hopefully, the right director (along with the right cast) will take the overblown cuteness out of it and return it to its origins.
I have high hopes for a film adaptation. Whenever that might be.

Posted: 10/30/11 at 7:05pmWhy would Universal want to make it "darker"? That would mean less kids and families on Opening Weekend (even given the name recognition at this point) and less money for them.

Yeah. Didn't he direct the Barbie Swan Lake movie?
No, but while I'd love for him to direct it, I don't see it ever happening. I think someone like Chris Columbus will get it.

Posted: 10/30/11 at 8:05pmWhile I think at this point it's ridiculous to ask that it return more to the novel (granted, I find the novel overated anyway, and think it would be utterly wretched on stage), but I do think the movie would benefit from a darker and even more serious, dare I say "realistic" approach to anchor the material. If they take the intended whimsy and lighter aspects of the show (and while I don't love the show on stage--I do admit I enjoy it),I think as a *movie* it would work even less.

Galinda: Elphie, let's start a fight club.
Elphaba: Good idea. Red goes good with Green.

Red and green... That would make it perfect for a Christmas release

Posted: 10/30/11 at 8:37pmIn terms of making money (which is what studio executives are paid to do) it makes 0 sense to go darker. If I was a studio exec. I'd try to fluff it up and make it as family friendly as possible. But as a fan of stuff that is good, obviously it would be much more interesting if it went darker.

Posted: 10/30/11 at 8:50pmI dunno, I suspect they see the potential in Wicked to have a sort of prestige film--one families go to but that critics and awards also like. It's not impossible and it depends completely on the approach. By darker, I don't mean "dark"--but it needs to be a bit grounded I think.

Posted: 10/30/11 at 8:53pm^ Well said. This has the potential to be a great film. And this is coming from someone who is not the biggest fan of the musical.

Posted: 10/30/11 at 8:56pmHow about keeping its tone the way it always has been? It certainly seems to be working in the larger sense ($$$$)? Why risk disturbing a winning...whatever it is that makes it popular? What, so that they could please the original novel fans? I take it 'darker' is code for "more serious." Why would they make such a ridiculous story more serious?

Posted: 10/30/11 at 9:02pmI just think if they go with the tone of the stag eversion but make it "bigger" it would be a mistake--by darker I just mean a bit more grounded.

Posted: 10/30/11 at 9:12pmYea I absolutely love the stage musical (its my personal favorite Broadway musical) but even I would love to see it have a darker approach. Like I said, the stage version is dark already but has a nice balance of dark and "fun" to make it just right but on screen I think the fun will translate poorly. The darker tones would just take it to a whole new level.

The one time I saw it (in L.A. back in 2007), I'd have had a better time had the chicks next to me not screeched in my ear laughing at every little gesture suggesting "comedy." They were laughing so hard during "Popular," I thought they went temporarily insane. All that over Glinda singing "lalalala." OK, I still don't get it.
If it means cutting stuff that will cause temporary insanity in audiences, then I'm all for iiiiiit.
