It's interesting how much Mashall's reputation suffered on this board because of NINE.

That said, I count myself in it. I don't' want him near another musical.

I like the Peter Jackson or Steven Spielburg idea.

On a side note I always wished Tim Burton had directed the Phantom movie, he would have brought the darkness it severly lacks!

What about Julie Taymore? She has a very unique aesthetic which could be amazing on film if she can edit herself and control her ego.

I personally think that whoever the director is should probably be American...only because this is such an intrinsically American story. Not that Curon and Jackson aren't superb directors, I just think this movie needs a distinctly American POV.

Julie Taymor? Was that a serious suggestion?

Universal Pictures: Steven Spielberg. Get him. Revisit the movie HOOK. I truly think he stands at the crossroads of how all other directors would approach the film - he'd give it the perfect blend of family-appropriate, action, suspense, darkness, drama, and heart.

Must we remember his stellar production of ANNIE! his concept with Chicago was brilliant and it fit within the musicals vaudeville concept. so I'm interested to see what he with do with WICKED as long as he keeps it a full blown traditional Musical.

I think Peter Jackson would be perfect. I know this won't happen, but I do wish more elements from the novel could be brought in. Sure would make it more interesting to me. I mean, let's explain that clock of the time dragon once and for all for Pete's Sake!

I love the idea of Alfonso Cuaron! He's probably too individual an artist to go for this, though.

I think Spielberg would do very well with this. It comes all set with sanitizing happy ending, so nothing would have to be drastically re-written.

And I'd be glad to see Tim Burton tackle WICKED.

Poor little Joe Mantello - not one of you has even mentioned him. He wants to be a movie makes sooo badly; did that big flop Love! Valour! Compassion! totally murder his film career?

^ I had read he didn't enjoy making the film LOVE! VALOUR... Specifically, that film wasn't for him.

He has the same agent as Julia Roberts, and other A-list Hollywood heavy-hitters. I'm sure he could get a film gig if he wanted one.

Where on earth did you hear that? He directed the play, and was very excited about making the movie. He was interviewed over and over at the time about how excited he was to make it.

'They need to bring in the "Lord of the Rings" crowd into the movie theatres. It should be heavy with effects and a large-scale CGI Land of Oz, with impressive locations, plenty of eye-candy, and as much "action" scenes as they can depict (flying monkeys, a flying witch, minions of soldiers and "townsfolk" hunting for Elphaba with torches and pitchforks, etc.).'

If they do this, the movie will be visually stunning. Oz is such a fantastical and whimsical place which I think Eugene Lee's original design failed to capture. And the action scenes would a lot to the overall effect of the film.

I'll have to try to find the interview, but I believe it was his Times profile circa TAKE ME OUT. He mentioned discovering film work wasn't for him. He may have been excited, but in this interview he had little interest in returning to film. This may have changed.

And again, he's a big name with a big agent, and huge show running around the world. If he wants to do a film, he will.

"I've said it before and I will say it again: Alfonso Cuarón."

Excellent suggestion. I think he would be great.

And I'd much rather see Rob Marshall get the gig than Tim Burton, who has a phobia against group singing. That's why he excised all of it in Sweeney Todd. He can't stand it. So there would be no chorus or choral numbers if he directs it. That automatically crosses him of any list for potential musical film directors, in my book. I think his stance on group singing is idiotic, and I think it really hurt the Sweeney film.

Rob Reiner can play the Wizard.

Woody Allen can do a voice over narration. Just because.

The newest name in the mix is a director "fanboys" hate, Brett Ratner. And Ratner is producing the Oscars this year (with Eddie Murphy as host).

>>>It’s been a while since chubby megalomaniac Brett Ratner deigned to bother the film world with his mirthless blitherings behind the camera but with the decidedly non-revolutionary “Tower Heist” hitting theatres in the proximate future, the bolshie “Rush Hour 3” director seemingly can’t keep his trap shut.

Not merely content with becoming an ubiquitous by-word for offensive mediocrity (next time you’re stuck in a public bathroom with a case of the runs be sure to scream out “I’m Ratnering!”), in an otherwise unremarkable New York Times piece, he lets slip that helming a film version of hit Broadway musical “Wicked” would be his “dream project.” Which is an odd coincidence, because we’ve had actual nightmares about that.

[snip]

As a project, this has been outwardly dead in the water for over a year, when J.J. Abrams, Ryan Murphy, James Mangold and Rob Marshall were in the frame as potential directors; none of whom are incendiary mavericks, but all arguably more competent than Ratner.<<<<

Dear God, Brett Ratner is one of the worst directors of our time.

There is nothing that suggests Ratner is in any way attached or being considered, other than him stating he would love to do it. Lots of people say they want to do things, it doesn't mean they actually will.

I'm still hoping they convince Peter Jackson to do it after he finishes the Hobbit movies. He could add back a little maturity and a broader scope to this fantasy that existed in the novel or at least bring the musical a little closer to what it was when it first opened.

It seems to have devolved so far into "High School Musical In Green Face." And the direction of the leading actors plays a big part in that.
