hmm... first time I have ever used that phrase that way.
Anyway, I see that they took down the Beck marquee. I can't wait to see the new Hirschfeld marquee.

I hope it's a nice marquee. The one at the Beck always seemd a bit plain for the theatre.

one of my fondest memories is seeing the original INTO THE WOODS at the Martin Beck. Remember the inflatable giant's leg that hung down the side of the building? I had a friend who lived nearby and I would crash at his apartment when I was visiting the city. I even second-acted INTO THE WOODS one night and saw Nancy Dussault as the Witch (after paying to see both Bernadette and Phylicia). She was surprisingly not bad. It's a great theatre. Perhaps since it's now named for a cartoonist (and not to put down Hirschfeld's art in any way by that title) the Disney movie transfers should all play there...like sentimental comedies should play at the Neil Simon and musicals at the Gershwin and Shubert.

I LOVE that boot. I was sooo happy when they pulled it out and used it at the Broadhurst for the revival. It is something that SCREAMS Into The Woods.

Rob,

Here is a link for a neat website that lists, among other things, every show that has played at a certain theater. It also will tell you what the theater used to be called if it had a name change. This site is a wealth of information.

I'm curious about the new marquee too. Lots of great memories at the Martin Beck. *sigh*

I loved the boot, too. Of course, I only saw ITW at the Broadhurst, but every time I walked under it, I felt like I could be crushed any second.

My first trip to the Martin Beck was "The Little Foxes" with Elizabeth Taylor. I remember the gorgeous Southern Parlor set with a rich, dark burgundy sofa -- or davenport as they say in the south -- Out came Ms Taylor for her first entrance in a long flowing, lots of cleavage, rich, dark burgundy gown. She sat on that sofa and blended right in and all you could see was that valley between two mountains. Yowwzah!

tommyboy,
I saw The Little Foxes at the Martin Beck too. Wasn't it a thrill to see Elizabeth Taylor in person? I sat in about the 10th row but had the binoculars on her the entire show. And stood outside the theatre after the show for about 2 hours to see her come out. WOW!! Breathtakingly gorgeous! And , all in all, the show was pretty good, too.
