Posted: 3/1/06 at 1:17pmThat's too bad. He's done some interesting stuff. I wonder why he would say that?

Posted: 3/1/06 at 1:43pmBecause he feels like he's said all he has to say at this point, which may be true, but I love the worlds he creates, so I'm a little disappointed. Plenty of authors spend their entire careers saying the same thing over and over!

I do wish I had seen the Leenane Trilogy when it was in its original run. Pillowman is brilliant (though not by any means perfect) but I'm not even going to talk about Lieutenant Of Inishmore.
That said, I am shocked he's only 35. For some reason I thought he was much older.

He's written 7 plays and he's only 35...Who wouldn't be a little burned out on the genre?
McDonagh has said before that he wants to take a break from playwrighting and focus on his screenplays - this isn't really new news.

Now he's going to write musicals.

Posted: 3/1/06 at 1:49pmI really respect what he said in the profile. I think that sounds incredibly reasonable and I'm amazed that someone would have the responsibility to undertake the act of not writing anything until he's learned more.

If only we could convince Bill Watterson to come out of hiding and draw a new comic.
*chalks MM up on the people who stopped doing what they do really well before it got old, which was probably a good idea, but it still makes me sad list*

I seem to remember him saying that he wanted to get out of playwrighting as far back as "Leenane".
Poppy, I can understand why you may not like "Inishmore", but HATE it? Can you explain in further detail?

Posted: 3/1/06 at 3:31pmI don't think he says he'll never write another play AGAIN. I thought his point was that he's been writing from the same perspective and now wants to take time off so that he can mature as a writer. I could be reading something into his statement that wasn't there, though.
