Posted: 4/12/05 at 11:30pmPardon the ignorance; who exactly has sung "Defying Gravity" in the "original key"? I assume they might be referring to Idina, ie, original "Elphaba"?

Posted: 4/12/05 at 11:32pmidina and shosh have obviously, but any man can sing it just an octave down.

OK - yes, an octave down would be the same key - but obviously he did not just sing it one octave down - he hit the same notes in the same octave that "Elphabas" sing it...
One whole octave down of "Defying Gravity" is pretty low and easy for a male voice...that wouldn't be very impressive - for example - when Raul Esparza sang it at Chatterbox, he didn't sing it in the original Idina octave, but sang it way higher than one octave down...

Posted: 4/12/05 at 11:56pmi know that. that's why i was wondering what the big deal was... because it didn't say the original voicing, it said the original key.

Posted: 4/12/05 at 11:58pmI'm trying to remember what note Raul's version went up to. He said it was in "his key," but that's still pretty damned high for a guy.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 12:02amI'm very non-technical when it comes to this voice/note thing, but... having heard Marty do the song last night, I have to say, from my untrained ear he went just as high as Idina did. It was actually almost absurd (in a good way).

Posted: 4/13/05 at 12:04amRaul's version is damn high lol. I've been practicing it, and now I can sing it as high as him(I'm so proud of myself :).

Posted: 4/13/05 at 12:05amHe can get something like a B flat, normally... I think they said how high the DG arrangement went at the Chatterbox, but I can't remember and it's driving me insane.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 12:33amI'm pretty sure Raul's version went up to a B. That would mean that the "deFying" crazy, insane, belt note was a B which is extremely high for a guy.

i heard a clip, (not to say that it was bad - which it wasn't) but i didnt really care for it all that much. it was a heck of alot better than i could ever do, but i just like when men sound like men.

Marty Thomas has an incredible range. I heard him do Celine Dion's version of "I Drove All Night" in her key and he was amazing. I'd not be surprised if he did it in the "female" key the way it is done on stage.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 1:32amI am a friend of Marty's and I didn't hear him do Defying Gravity last night but I did hear him sing it at an audition a while back and he most certainly sang it in the origional show key....Idina's key, Shoshana's key, the same key. He has this freaky middle range between his normal voice and his falsetto, it's really impressive. He hits the high f....it's crazy.

Please post the clips!
If you don't already have it, go and buy Marty's CD from cdbaby.com. It's ridiculous. He's one of the craziest tenors I've ever heard.
