Thinking about Mary as I was unfamiliar with her work prior to having seen her in the national tour of Cabaret, in a truly thrilling performance with incredible vocal chops as Fraulein Schneider, and was quite surprised to see that she hadn't done much in the way of major roles, aside from smaller replacement and understudy jobs and roles in several flops such as Hands on a Hardbody, Footloose, and replacing in the original Into The Woods as both the Baker's Wife and The Witch. As stated before, I found her vocal chops to be quite incredible, and think that she'd make a great Dolly in Hello Dolly, perhaps in a Donna Murphy style situation alongside Betty Buckley, as her voice has a similar tone and husk as Buckley's, particularly in her earlier days. Anyone know why in particular she hasn't had as many successes in her career as, say a Buckley or LuPone?

For the same reason, I imagine, that applies to 99.99% of talented unknown artists - there's a very small, finite amount of success to go around, and it doesn't go around evenly.

She was also in a couple of Broadway flops, Play me A Country Song, and the revival of Little Me with James Coco & Victor Garber. If I remember correctly, she spent many years on One Life To Live. I always enjoyed her on that show and she was delightful in the revival of Little Me.

She was actually the one replacement as the Baker's Wife in Broadway's Into The Woods (original production) that I liked. Most of the other replacements couldn't quite erase Joanna Gleason's performance but Ms. Murray was unique enough to bring something new to the part.
