Mary Poppins

Are there any plans to bring "Mary Poppins" to Broadway? The film was similar in many ways to "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". Songs by the Sherman Brothers, Dick Van Dyke as lead, a flying car, a flying nanny, a lonely brother and sister, set in Britain, etc.

I heard at one point, they were trying to get Julie Andrews to play the mom part. I wonder what happened with that...

Somewhat, but her range is shot. I think she sorta sang in one of the recent "Eloise" movies, and it was like an octave below what you're used to hearing her sing.

Yes. I always have the "music choice" Broadway station on for background noise at my house, and every time a Julie Andrews song comes on, it makes me a little sad because I know I won't ever get to hear her do those songs live. I was lucky enough to see her near the end of her run in "Victor/Victoria," right before her vocal problems started.

My parents, however, are the really lucky ones. They saw her in "Camelot."

I hope they bring it to Broadway. It was a major hit in London, and London crowds are way more critical than NY ones. Besides, Disney needs another hit, and I'm not sure if their upcoming "Tarzan" will be a hit or a dud.

I saw it in London, and I thought it was great. I didn't think Laura Michelle Kelly was as AMAZING as what I had heard she was. I thought she was very good, but not amazing. She did everything that you would expect as Mary Poppins, but didn't do anything THAT special with the role. I thought Gavin Lee, who played Bert (the Dick Van Dyke role) was absolutely fantastic. It's a great production, and from all reports, Cam Mac wants it on Broadway.

I am obsessed with this show. I was visiting my aunt in London, and I was dying to see it because I love Laura Michelle Kelly. It's currently being abused in my CD player. I'm so excited for when the show comes here!!

I waited at the stage door in London (which a total of 2 people knew about) and met LMK, and she was definitely one of the sweetest people I'd ever met. I had played Hodel in a community theatre production, and we spent at least 10 minutes talking about the show and about other stuff I had played. She was really interested in what I had to say.

I'm quite proud of myself - I can finally spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and not have to double check with the cd.

Hi! I'm new here
WOW, if julie andrews gets a part, i will definitely going to see her... Even if I have to fly across the atlantic. I don't think her voice is as good as before. But when I heard "Your Crowning Glory" by Julie andrews and raven in Princess Diaries II..... Hiks, I started to cry... What a beautiful voice (even it is lower

The plan, as I know it (because I have a Disney bigwig in the family):

Lion King will move to the Minskoff once Fiddler closes. Lion King itself will be closed for a few weeks for retooling and rescaling, as the theater undergoes renovation.

Mary Poppins will open in Fall, 2006 at the Disney house, the New Amsterdam, after that undergoes renovations.

On a side note, Tarzan will open as scheduled after major renovations of the Richard Rodgers.

I saw it as well in London. She played Mary with a dose of sarcasm and love...hmm just like my dear old mom!
It will do well...another show for people to drag their children to and tell them SSHH SHHH..a million times in two hours.

I have to agree with you 100% on that. That part in "Step in Time" is jaw-droppingly good re: Mary Poppins. I hope Gavin Lee will be able to bring Bert to Broadway.
