re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

"CyCoSpAz2, this is not a belting show. If anything there would be a song to show of Brown's amazing soprano."

I know it is not a belting show, and that isn't the reason I didn't enjoy the show.

Robert Taylor, it's more based on the book then the film. People are disappointed because they see Disney and think a show like The Little Mermaid, not a show that is actually like a Broadway show.

Again your review talks a lot about the film. It's based mainly on the books.

Robert Taylor. How does one review a shoe? Do you make comments based on what kind of shoe it is or how long the laces are?

And, I agree with Wishingonlywounds2, that the show does have some aspects of the movies (mostly the songs) but the scenes are mostly from the book with the additional new story line just for the show. The new story line just for the show is the storyline about Mr. Banks loosing his job.

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

Exactly. In my humble opinion, I think the show would have been better if it stuck closer to the movie because Mary is such a nasty bore in the books.

Just my opinion.

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

The only way it could be transfered to the stage was by using the books, it is something PL Travers insisted on.

Robert has the flu and is waiting for his Nyquil to kick in, which might cause him to talk about himself in third person and spell words wrong.

And Winston, as someone who has stood up for you when you made spelling and grammar errors in the past, it would be appreciated if you did not tease me for it. Muchas gracias.

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

WOW, I understand all that, but it does not make "Mary Poppins" a better show.

And I didn't mean to turn this thread into a bickering contest. I'm ecstatic the posters within this thread love the show, it certainly does have some great things going for it, I just don't think it's all that great and it certainly isn't a big "secret" on Broadway. That's all. You guys may go back to loving it now.

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the show on stage considering the fact that ever since I was a child, I hated the film.

In The Movie, Sister suffragette, I kind of think is replaced with Rebbecca Luker's "Being Mrs. Banks and the reprise" Of course it is not as giddy as SS but Being Mrs Banks is more effective since it gives Mrs banks some background and emotion. I kind of think Michael and Jane banks are shadowed by the parents.

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

I thought that too. I actually heard in an interview with Ashley Brown that "Practically Perfect" was originally in the movie but "Sister Suffragette" replaced it and the producers decided to bring it back for the show.

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

"Practically Perfect" was a song written by the Sherman Bros. to what later became the tune of "Sister Suffragette." The "Practically Perfect" in the musical serves basically the same purpose as the one written for the film...it's just not really as good, in my opinion. I don't really understand why they didn't just dig some of the many, many songs the Shermans wrote for the film that did not make the final cut.

Again, I don't think the fact that it is partially based on the books is an excuse for the show's biggest weaknesses. I enjoy most of the totally new scenes. But, there are so MANY scenes and songs that serve basically the same function as a scene in the movie, only they don't do it nearly as well. If they had merely added to the film, which was pretty much as faithful as you could get without making some sort of episodic, story-less mess, I would have been fine with it. Instead, in many cases they decided to basically re-write sections of the film.

Wow, I'm making it sound like I enjoyed it much less than I did...

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

I don't think Mary Poppins in a secret. There was plenty of buzz when it opened. In 2006!!! And was there a "Practically Perfect" written by the Sherman Brothers? The one in the show is written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

Kind of off-topic, not trying to thread steal...

First it was...
Mary Poppins, Broadway's Super Hit Musical
Now it's...
Mary Poppins, Broadway's Perfectly Magical Musical

Any else think it should be...
"Mary Poppins, Broadway's Practically Perfect Musical"?

Sorry, I just noticed they changed it and it has always been a pet peeve of mine.

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

Broadway's Practically Perfect musical implies that it's actually not perfect. I don't think they would be interested in parading that fact.

re: Mary Poppins : Broadway's Best Kept Secret?

Saw the show a couple times a few years ago in London and was shocked that I actually enjoyed it. Saw Scarlett perform it once and thought she was lovely in the role. All in all, probably my favorite of the Disney shows I've seen (haven't seen Mermaid), mostly because I felt Lion King (despite the amazing costumes) and Beauty and the Beast just couldn't match the magic of the original films.
