Mary Poppins CD

Got it from Amazon.co.uk as soon as it came out and I LOVE IT! I was a little disappointed that more songs from the film were left out of the show than I realized, but the album is still wonderful. The new songs fit in perfectly and the arrangements of the original songs are extraordinary! If you do pick it up, I hope you enjoy.

I just got it today. It's nice how the songs come off a little bit more realistically than in the movie. Laura has an amazing voice. Quite worth the money.

My grandparents just saw the show in London. They said it was the best show they've ever seen. And they go pretty often to NYC. They didn't even bring me back a present. I should have asked them to buy me the cd...crap!

If anyone out there has seens it: do you think i should buy the cast recordeing before i see the show, or wait.

for complex shows like caroline or change, it can help- but in funny shows like avenue q you already know alot of the jokes. i am assuming it is not going to be as intense as C. or C.... but.... YOUR THOUGHTS?

This CD is one of the rare cases that I enjoyed more the cast album than the actual show... maybe thats because I saw the show on previews (@ Bristol) and I wasn't ready to see so many changes from the movie, but the cast recording is great.

I saw the London production this last December and was amazed. One of the best things I have seen in a long time. The album is terrific and I do reccomend geting it and listening to it even if you have not seen the show. I hope All Shook UP doesn't last since I think the Palace theater would be a ideal home for Poppins.

Okay, I got my MARY POPPINS OLCR from amazon UK. I listened to it once through yesterday, and now I've listened to it 3 times through on my iPod here at work. I'm under rehire with Disney Consumer Products as a character artist, so I'm a Disney-phile through and through. I am one of the many of children who grew up with Mary Poppins. It's a brilliantly magical film, so much so that I obsess over it. I was delighted to hear that it was being adapted for the stage, and from the clips and songs I had heard via the internet previously, I was very excited. But now that I've heard the Cast Recording, I'm a little confused. Maybe some of you who have seen it can help me out. I have a million questions, and I am posting some spoilers, so don't read ahead if your waiting to see the show.

Firstly, does it seem a bit dodgy that Mary Poppins proceeds to scare the SH*T out of the children? First with the park, then with the demonic toys in the nursery, then by leaving them with the seemingly witch-like and drunk Mrs. Brill as a replacement? It seems that a new derivitive of the show is that Jane and Michael are total hoodlums that really need a mental whoopin'. Part of the charm of the movie was that Mary Poppins had an elusive way of trickery. She disguised her lessons so that the children would learn valuable lessons of responsibility. And she did the same with the lessons that she taught Mr. and Mrs. Banks. She brought the family together. And there's another plot point that's interesting. We find out that George Banks was raised by a rotten nanny named Miss Andrew. Is this right? If so, how does this fit into the plot? It's confusing.

The costumes and the sets look amazing. The one thing that I keep in mind is that Walt Disney was a pioneer who believed in evolution and change. Mary Poppins was a story that was very close to his heart, and I think he would have loved to see a stage version of his classic film.

I would love it dearly if someone would post a synopsis of the show, so that I can better understand the recording.

What do you guys think about the new song "ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN". I think it's brilliant...and fits in so well with the tone of the show.

I think it's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I haven't warmed up to all of the new stuff yet, but it's growing on me. GET IT!

I am seeing it next Tuesday from Row E center in the orchestra ! It's the first show of my London trip ! I'll let you all know what i think, as soon as I get back home !

BrdwyThtr you have the names mixed up. Mrs. Brill is the housekeeper who ends up with the children at the end of Act 1. MISS ANDREW is Mr. Banks' former nanny who shows up at the beginning of Act 2.

JHartnow the children aren't hoodloms -- they ARE spoiled brats and little snobs who don't take care of what they own -- hence the scene where the toys put them on trial -- for losing their temper. While Jane and Michael are startled when Neleus talks to them and moves, they aren't scared by him and the other dancing statues.

There is no jumping into a chalk picture on the pavement. Bert's pictures are hung on the fence. As you say the children are on their own when Neleus starts to talk-- that is the signal that the park has become magical. Mary and Bert show up in their Jolly Holiday clothes soon after

As I said, the children are left in the care of Mrs. Brill, the housekeeper, who isn't drunk or witch-like. Mary Poppins left because the children had to go through the "next step" on their own. On and off throughout the first act, Mr. Banks always held up Miss Andrew as an example of what a nanny should be. However, when his wife finds and hires her, they quickly learn the reality -- that she was very much old school believing that children should know their place, be seen and not heard. She is played a bit witch-like. Miss Andrew doesn't stay around long though, as Mary Poppins returns during the song Let's Go Fly a Kite, and soon sends Miss Andrew off.

The stage show is not a carbon copy of the film -- no dancing penguins, no horse race, no tea party on the ceiling. It's adapted from the book as well as the film. It's been awhile since I've read the book, but I do vaguely recall the book being a bit darker.

Mary Poppins was the very first film I ever saw, and it has been one of my all time favorites ever since. I was enchanted by what I saw on the stage on the Prince Edward Theatre -- so much so I'm going back again in July.
