Mary Poppins In Australia

I know this is the West-End board, but because some of the performers in the Australian production have strong ties with UK theatre (OK, so Philip Quast), I was wondering if anyone had seen it or knows anyone who knows someone who has seen it etc?

Can you tell i'm a Quast fan?

Mary Poppins In Australia

l certainly have seen it, although only at the first preview.
All l can see is that its a near perfect production, the most lavish, beautiful, magical musical we've seen here in Australia in a long time. l feel as though all the expectations l had for Wicked (which were dashed), have been truly exceeded by Mary Poppins. Unlike Wicked, Poppins has the right combination of depth and spectacle.
The entire cast is wonderful. Verity Hunt-Ballard is a revelation as Mary herself, and as for Mr. Quast, he is, as usual, nothing short of brilliant. He lends unexpected depth and pathos to what could easily be quite a boring role. His performance adds a new depth of emotion to the show which has a great pay off in the end.
Judging by the reviews, the show is a huge hit,and it seems as though it will have a nice long run here.

Mary Poppins In Australia

The Sunday Herald Sun said it "brilliantly produced but lacking heart" yep, sounds like a Cameron Macintosh show. Since opening last Thursday Verity Hunt-Ballad missed both shows Sunday, also missing in action for a show was Debra Byrne and several chorus members. This must be a first, long run itis in the first week!

I could give you a long list of Cam Mack shows that have a lot of heart but given you are determined to judge the show from one phrase in one review, the pointless. And you have absolutely no idea why the performers were out.

I find all Cameron Macintosh show machinelike.

Apparently most of the lead cast were out after a week due to flu, but they all appear to be back now...

Mary Poppins In Australia

There's been some very bad bugs going around Melbourne recently, its hardly surprising that a few cast were out. The depth of talent in the Poppins ensemble is astounding, so even if a lead is out, the audience is in for a treat.
As for the Herald Sun review, no-one respects anything written by that paper, as it recently totally cut its Arts pages, and only re-instated them due to uproar. lt is locally referred to as the Herald Scum.
The fact is, audiences are loving Poppins, its had near perfect reviews (apart from the aforementioned tripe), and its due to run for a very long time.

No matter what you say the Sunday Herald Sun has a big readership and the review was by the highly respected Catherine Lambert.

Ol' misery guts aside, ClapYo'Hands, Phillip is wonderful, as is the whole production. Just ask the other 1,500 people that saw the show the same night as me and who have seen it since.

Well, I'm glad you liked it and I'm glad others have liked it. I was just saying that not all the press has been wonderful as you would like the world to believe for some reason.

I agree that the Mary Poppins i had to watch for 3 months grrr, looked brilliant, the cast were awesome, effects magical etc but it had no heart at all.

l feel l've probably been unfairly harsh in this thread.
What l would really like to say is that l can understand how some would perceive this show to be lacking heart, the point l'm trying (perhaps badly) to make, is that due to Phillip's genuinely human performance of George Banks, the show is emotionally effecting. Though one might expect a Disney/Cam Mack production to be so, to witness the arc of Mr. Banks through the show, and follow his journey to the end of the show, l found very moving. l can, however, see how it would be less so in the hands of a weaker actor.

I dont really think cast is the issue, i think you have the best cast (the one i sat through for months were brilliant) its sadly the writting, it's so simplistic and cheesy that it just does not display enough heart to make you really care.

...which surely is a flaw in a show about MARY POPPINS.

Shouldn't this topic really be on the Australian Board (which doesn't see too much action).

Should be on the Australian board, but no one wants to talk about it there.

I agree with SADM - the show is heavy on cheese and light on heart. And most of the score is pretty forgettable - apart from "Supercali-etc", which I wish I could forget lol (that song drives me crazy). When I saw it in London, even though the cast were wonderful, I was bored silly.
