Posted: 1/11/07 at 8:29amSince all the other Disney musicals have eventually made it to Toronto, do you think Poppins will? After the short Phantom run, The Princess of Wales will be free...

It would seem like the next logical choice for a production in North America. Touring MARY POPPINS would be difficult with that set.
However, it's no longer a sell-out in London at the 1,600-seat Prince Edward Theatre. But New York has been doing sell out business lately, but we don't know how long that will be kept up for... advance sales are also a big decisionmaker... but who knows? The show seems like the kind that would be right for Toronto.

Yes Billy Elliot was rumoured for Toronto, and still is, but since the Broadway announcement for 2008 was made, that rumour is slowly dying.
Mirvish WILL NOT run 3 sitdowns at one time again in the near future. They will have We Will Rock You at the Canon and Dirty Dancing at the Royal Alex. They will use the Princess for other shows in their subscription season.
A couple years ago when Mirvish was running Mamma Mia, Hairspray and The Producers, they realized that Toronto (at that time at least) can not sustain 3 sit down productions. And had to basically close all of them around the same time.
The Jersey Boys or Avenue Q rumours have quietly disappeared from Dancap Productions (new-ish producer in Toronto). Apparently things aren't going as planned with them. Hopefully that will change soon.

Anything can happen... The Mirvishes could opt to have three theatres running just like they did in 1995 when there were productions of MISS SAIGON (and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST shortly after), CRAZY FOR YOU and THE WHO'S TOMMY... they stopped their subscription season back then. And also, I recall, they stopped their subscription season in 1989/1990 for LES MIZ, when they only had shows in one theatre.
In the world of theatre marketing, it's very tough to get back a subscription audience after a one or two year lapse. But the Mirvishes have been able to get back their audiences despite taking a year or two break from subscriptions before.
But they also have the option of moving shows to the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres like they had been doing when MAMMA MIA! and LION KING were running. They can also get more creative by using the Hummingbird Centre as a venue for a show (i.e., THE LAST EMPRESS and BLAST!) or the Harbourfront Centre (i.e., THE ADVENTURES OF BLACK GIRL...).
David Mirvish may want to get back to more artsy programming... such as when he brought the Berliner Ensemble with THE THREEPENNY OPERA to Toronto. I know he's been keeping an eye on a couple of West End and international shows, so we'll see what happens in the next few years.
