Mary Poppins or Die, Mommie, Die?

Coming to NYC on MLK weekend in January. I already have tix for "Young Frankenstein" for the Saturday mat and hope to see "Xanadu" that evening. Also hoping to see "August: Osage County" on Friday night and "Come Back Little Sheba" on the Sunday mat. This leaves me with two choices on Sunday night, "Mary Poppins" or "Die, Mommie, Die." I'm a big fan of Charles Busch and loved the film version of the play, but would also like to see Ashley Brown in "Poppins." Would love to hear your opinions as to what I should pick.

I saw MARY POPPINS back when it first started its run, and I just got back from seeing DIE MOMMIE DIE! tonight.

As an adult gay male, I can tell you that you will have a much more enjoyable overall experience at DIE MOMMIE DIE! than you will at MARY POPPINS.

POPPINS is a cardboard cut-out Disney show, starring a non-star who was cast for the sole purpose of being easily replaceable.

MOMMIE stars an irreplaceable LEGEND (who also happens to be the playwright), along with a crackling hot cast that completely brings this camp fest to believable life.

POPPINS will always be there, plus even if you're set on seeing Ashley Brown, she has just signed on until the fall of 2008.

MOMMIE is here for a short time, and it is so much freaking fun.

The POPPINS audience is filled with whiny, crying brats and their annoyed parents telling them to shut up and enjoy the show (while you're trying to hear the actors over them and enjoy the show yourself).

The MOMMIE audience (at least tonight) was like a gay men's communion. Truly a spectacular experience and the perfect group with whom to relish this marvelous piece of camp at its finest.

MOMMIE all the way.

The two shows could not be more polar opposites. It truly depends on what sort of mood you're in. One is a big, flashy Broadway musical. The other is an adult-oriented off-Broadway show. Two completely different animals. To compare them would be silly.

Thanks Wanna Be A Foster--I too am an adult gay male, so it looks like its going to be "Die, Mommie, Die." And thanks for reminding me that Disney shows always have those "whiny, crying brats" in the audience.

Exactly what I was thinking.
While I love Poppins I have to go WBAF on this, see Die Mommie Die. Only because Poppins will be around a lot longer. I highly recommend seeing it your next time here.

Just bought my ticket for "Die Mommie Die"--sitting row B at the orchestra level for the performance on Sunday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m. It only cost $44, which is much cheaper than any ticket for "Poppins." Thanks for your input.

Although I have NOT seen Poppins, I LOVED Die Mommy Die and highly recommend seeing it with Mr. Busch. You will love it!

You made the correct choice. Although, I would kill for a Mary Poppins umbrella.

I liked both shows but Mary Poppins was my least favorite Disney show. I loved Lion King. I also loved Beauty and The Beast.
But Lion King is the greatest Disney show ever created. I adore it!!!!

DMD is perfect if you're a fan of camp. Busch delivers a Master Class in the art of acting camp, and the rest of the cast (esp. Ashley Morris) is very strong.

Charles is my favorite playwright and favorite actor.
Go see it!!! He is hysterical. I need to see it a second time.
The facial expressions he makes made me cry from laughing so hard.

I still prefer Vampire Lesbians of Sodom. I wish Julie was in this one. Busch without Halston is strange. They are like
Lucy and Desi.
Julie, needs to be in all of Charles shows.


Actually, they are more like Ethel and Lucy.

I wish they could do Vampire Lesbians of Sodom in that theater.
Funniest show I have ever seen in my entire life. The benefit a few years ago was the greatest evening of theater.
Halston. Vilanch. Charles. Brent Barrett. I was on a cloud.

I want to thank all those who responded. I have no doubt I picked the right show. I love camp and have been a big fan of Busch's for many years. Since I can only get to NYC once a year, it's always hard to pick shows. I have five slots and tix to "Young Frankenstein," so I guess I'll get my "big budget musical" fix there. Also seeing "August: Osage County" and "Come Back, Little Sheba" and plan on buying tickets to "Xanadu." January can't get here fast enough.

These 2 shows couldn't be any different. Ha, ha...

I saw "Mary Poppins" last year right after it opened and really, really enjoyed it. Didn't go in with any pre-conceived notions of how it should or should not be played, like so many people do. I always wonder about that........why would you go to the theatre, all ready in a mind frame, that you're not going to have a good time, and be overly critical or something that you have no say so in? I just don't think that way.

I'll be in NYC between Christmas and New Year's....seeing a ton of shows, including "Die Mommie Die." I'm looking forward to it. It looks like a lot of fun.

And, regarding what WANNA BE A FOSTER said, what does one's sexual orientation have to do with seeing a show? What difference does that make? People of all walks of life enjoy the theatre..........short, tall, black, white, gay, straight, Asian, Jewish, Lutheran, etc........ Who cares if someone is gay or straight? What does that have to do with going to the theatre?

As a gay man (stealing Andy's line above), I'd suggest neither.

I'm a fan of Disney.
I'm a fan of Charles Busch.

Neither Mary Poppins nor Die Mommie Die had me terribly impressed. And I'm easily impressed!

If you're looking for a good show for a good dollar, there are more promising shows to choose from. Roll the dice.
