I'm sorry if this has been discussed already, but I saw a post from Emma Howard stating that the original Matildas, Tim Minchin, and Van Dean received "Special Merit Awards from the Grammys." I can't find anything else that references this. Anyone know what this was about? I know the cast recording was nominated for a Grammy, but didn't win. So what were these awards for?

Yes...from wiki...
Winners are presented with the Grammy Award and those who do not win are given a medal for their nomination.

That's quite a fancy way to say you didn't win a Grammy...

But we always here that at all award shows, don't we? "It's an honor just to have been nominated.."
That IS true - there are a lot of artists in all categories that are very talented and not even nominated. Plus in this case...There are not many 11-10 year olds that were up for Grammy's so hopefully the medal will mean something special to them.
Do they really get a medal? I thought it was just a certificate. There's like 90 categories - that's a lot of metal!
