Matilda is OBVIOUSLY winning best musical.... — Page 2

Yeah, I haven't seen Matilda yet, but I did see Kinky Boots and it was . . . okay, nothing more. I certainly have no intention of getting the album. I somewhat have a prejudice against Matilda -- can't say why and maybe it will, in fact, be the "best" musical this season, which doesn't say much about the rest of the season.

A Christmas Story is certainly eligible for a Best Musical nomination, but it is seen purely as a light holiday entertainment and nothing more, no matter how well done. There are always a few strange nominees every year, but this would be truly out there.

If they do nominate something like A Christmas Story or Bring It On it will be more to send a message to something else that it wasn't appreciated.

I think the key phrase here is, "no matter how well done"

Call me a "cock-eyed optimist", but my hope is that the Tony Committee will see differently. I have to believe that is true because if I don't, I will have to succumb to the notion that MONEY (or DISNEY...) governs what will succeed on Broadway.

Like i've said before, I LOVED Matilda. I think the music is phenomenal, as well as the production. Out of any show, Matilda deserves to win. It is fresh, innovative, with great performances and music. I think the only true competition is Kinky Boots. If Hardbody gets nominated, great. But it has no shot. As I've said before, I would love to see Bring It On or Christmas Story get a nom over HB.

For Best Musical, I think Matilda and Motown will be solid nominations with Kinky Boots, Cinderella, Bring It On and Hands on a Hardbody equally fighting for the other two slots (I agree with Whizzer that a holiday musical getting the nomination extremely unlikely). The nominations for Best Score will be a bit more interesting as Motown and Cinderella will be ineligible. I do think either Bring It On or Christmas Story could knock Kinky Boots out of contention.

I love the score for Matilda. I'm a little surprised at the negative reactions to the show, but then I realized this is BWW and added the appropriate grains of salt. Saw Piazza in the Chicago tryout and on Broadway (preferred the Chicago production and cast) and it was an odd sensation. I didn't feel anything profound when watching it, but there was this residual emotional resonance the show had that I could not shake for WEEKS. It was after the show that I understood how affecting the material truly was.

You're not. I liked it; so did a good many others. It was definitely not for the snob set, though.

One thing's certain: it was a hell of a lot better than the puerile Book of Mormon, the godawful Once, and the deadly-dull Matilda.

Cinderella has been been put forward for the Best Revival category.

I did enjoy Memphis. I thought it was a pretty solid conventional book musical. But I thought American Idiot was more artistically creative as a show, even with its preexisting score.

Interesting how many who are singing its praises have yet to actually see the show.

I've seen the show, but I find it basically irrelevant whether or not you've seen the shows when it comes to guessing nominations/wins. Same thing goes for the Oscars. It's mostly campaign politics and money that win awards. It's naive to believe otherwise.

In a way it's harder to predict winners when you do see everything because good performances that will be nominated, but have no chance of winning and can mess with your head. If you looked at the Oscars this year with your head and not your heart you knew with 100% certainty that Lawrence was winning Best Actress. If you went to see Amour it was easy to get caught up in "Will Riva pull an upset?" thinking.

There are always a few surprises and upsets, but on the whole you can see Tony & Academy Award Winners coming from a mile away.

You're right taz- the Spring Awakening/Grey Gardens year was competitive, but really I think that year is a good example of my example with thinking Riva could beat Lawrence. It was easy to fall in love with Grey Gardens and think that it could have toppled Spring Awakening, but I think in reality it never had a chance.

The Piazza/DRS/Jersey Boys year was competitive too, but I sadly wasn't surprised by that outcome either.

I can see Motown being snubbed if the critics intensely dislike it. It could be the Priscilla/9 to 5 type exclusion. I feel like Bring It On is such a distant memory though, and it also failed to sell well after the initial summer months. If Bring It On had been a decent sized hit I would be more inclined to think it had a shot at a nomination.
