I happen to like
Matilda's score a lot. I think it's melodically clever and the lyrics are cheeky, fun and even insightful (from the perspective of recalling what it's like to be that age).
But if, say,
The Light in the Piazza were brand new on Broadway this year,
Matilda would be my runner up for Best Musical.
(Since I've only seen Internet pictures and video of
Matilda, and the majority of what I know about the show comes from closely following the West End production, take the above with a grain of salt...!)
