It's not like it really has any threatening competition. It's not a work of art but it's looks like a very entertaining show. It's a very lackluster year for new musicals... *sigh

Agreed, it's not groundbreaking as such but it's just a very classy and entertaining show, its sharp and clever, atmospheric, ...the story has substance, excellent characters and some good songs...
But lets be clear, just because there is no real competition, this would be a worthy addition to the tony best musical list
i have two words for that....
KINKY BOOTS

meh more or less. It's not a bad addition but it's not necessarily a great one IMO. It's worthy
But broadway guy, you haven't even seen the show so how can you have these opinions that aren't your own, there merely based on others!
Go see the show!!!

You have a point. I'm hoping to see the show in May when I'm in NY.
I mean, it's certainly no worse than freakin' Memphis...

It would say a lot if it were worse than Memphis.

"Kinky Boots"? Really? Really?
Oh yeah..."Memphis" once did win the Tony didn't it...?
oh dear
In my opinion, MATILDA would certainly win over ONCE had they been in the same year.
Matilda is definitely nowhere near as good as Memphis!

hak5 - you're dreaming. Yes - Kinky Boots is very well done. But if I was a voter and had to choose between KB and Matilda I would definitely choose Matilda hands down.
There is Kinky Boots & Motown. All three I would assume are locks for a best new musical nomination.

This year doesn't have groundbreaking musicals. Matilda is entertaining, sure. But Kinky Boots is actually a good time and joyous. Matilda was a drag.
Matilda is as obvious winner as BOM was a few years ago. There is no real competition. When was the last time you watched the Tony Awards and REALLY wondered what was going to win Best Musical? The Avenue Q win?
I hope the over-rated Matilda doesn't win best musical That music is atrocious and you can't hum the set. It probably will though. Sigh.
You mean... you mean... it wont be GHOST?

I think some people on this board just don't want matilda to succeed because it's a British production....it's like some people in their posts are almost willing it, wanting it to fail
I can't wait for opening night, let the show speak for itself!
Don't underestimate A Christmas Story in this weak year.
Christmas Story will be fortunate if it is even nominated, come on.
>>It's not like it really has any threatening competition.
That's it in a nutshell for me.
I happen to like Matilda's score a lot. I think it's melodically clever and the lyrics are cheeky, fun and even insightful (from the perspective of recalling what it's like to be that age).
But if, say, The Light in the Piazza were brand new on Broadway this year, Matilda would be my runner up for Best Musical.
(Since I've only seen Internet pictures and video of Matilda, and the majority of what I know about the show comes from closely following the West End production, take the above with a grain of salt...!)

It will be true shock for them to nominate a seasonal show like A Christmas Story.
The nominees seem straightforward enough to me:
Matilda
Kinky Boots
Motown
Hands on a Hardbody
Hardbody got very respectable reviews- better than Chaplin or Bring It On, and should have no trouble snagging that fourth slot.
If they feel like snubbing one of those above four nominees it would be Motown; the critics could detest it, but I don't think they will show it the hate they dished out to Addams Family or Wonderland.
Haven't seen Matilda yet, but the only comments I hear are "it's OK." (Which, granted, are the same comments I hear about Kinky Boots.)
I saw the light in the piazza at curve Leicester in the uk a couple of years ago, no way is that a better musical than matilda, gosh I'm stunned someone has said that!!!!
