Matty proved how bad he actually is in The Odd Couple. He knew it, Lane knew it, the critics knew it, the audience knew it.
He did get lucky: he is now one of the most bankable Broadway stars because of his chemistry with Lane in The Producers.
Doesn't make him a very good actor, though.

Yeah, Broderick totally got lucky with The Producers. And H2$. And Brighton Beach Memoirs. And Torch Song.
And those Tonys and Drama Desk Award. Whatever. All luck, luck, luck.

Yankeefan hit the nail on the head. Matthew is horrible on stage. Actually, I enjoyed everything I have seen him in except for The Odd Couple. He took away from the show (and there wasn't much to it in the first place) The whole time I was sitting there watching him and I could think was "OH...MY...GOD!" and that's not in a good way. He upstaged Nathan with how awful he was. I wish they would've gotten Mark Linn-Baker but then it wouldn't have been the money maker that it was.
And I never understood why they had to get ANOTHER big name in it (Brad Garret) when they already had Nathan Lane AND Matthew Broderick on stage together. That sells tickets easy enough. I though Brad Garrett was pretty bad. Mike Starr who replaced him was dead on and just FANTASTIC!

I knew I was going to get that. lol.
But Nathan Lane is a great performer and it upsets me that a lot of people only know him for The Lion King, Mousehunt or The Bridcage.
He proved he shouldn't be type cast with his performance in Butley. Now, I know a lot of people didn't like his performance but then a lot of people did.

Nathan is fun to watch in almost (I said almost) everything he does. He can and does get to be too much in large doses.
Broderick can be charming and sweet, but he is also an acquired taste.
Do I recall correctly that Mattyhew wanted to play Dr. Fronk-en-steen, but was nixed by Mel Brooks? I'd love to know Mel's reasons. I know why I wouldn't want to see Matthew in the role, but I'd like to hear Mel's.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 1:47pmPersonally, I don't care for either of them. Broderick has been OK in some movie (Torch Song, Ferris Bueller, WAR Games), but awful in others. Lane is a talented diva, but his schtick has gotten tiring.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 2:32pmNeither. I find Nathan Lane supremely annoying and while I liked Matthew during the 80's, he doesn't look like he's even trying anymore. I'm referring there to his movies; I've never seen him on stage.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 5:05pmNathan Lane by far. Whatever talent Mannered Broderick had its been replaced by cheap theatrical tricks. His performances in the film The Producers, The remake of The Music Man, The Odd Couple, The Foreigner .... he sucked in all of them.

The only reason Matthew has a career is his father, and his father was much better.
According to people. I don't own any movies that his father is in.

Don't get me wrong, Matthew can act. Just in nothing I have seen.
Other than Ferris.
