I liked him in Grey Gardens, but I thought he was woefully miscast in West Side Story. He portrays Tony in such a way that you can't for a minute take him seriously as a former gang leader. Granted, when I saw him it was during the DC tryout, but judging from the reviews on this board, it doesn't look there's been much improvement.

Posted: 10/2/09 at 8:37pmI thought he was supposed to be a guy that was part of a gang, but has a soft side.

Posted: 10/2/09 at 10:12pmHe was okay in Grey Gardens, I guess (obviously not the part of the show that people remember, nor should he have been). Other than that, I think he's as bland as old unbuttered white bread and water. There's nothing there except a pretty voice.

Posted: 10/3/09 at 2:14pmI agree with PalJoey. Sweetness is nice and has a place, but Tony isn't supposed to be sweeet. There is a difference between having a soft side and being a pushover. I never once bought that Matt's tony had ever been part of a gang. Ever.

8 bars of music and an 8-pack were all he needed to convince Arthur, apparently...
... and I'd expect no less.

Posted: 10/3/09 at 10:21pmHe does have some good notes, but his voice is just so nasal. I guess everyone has their pet peeves, and mine's excessively nasal voices. And sometimes, he sounds almost girlish-- not in tone, but in style, sort of like John Travolta in drag.

Matts not really BAD. I just cant see him as Tony. the first time I saw the show I compared him to a "Boy Band singer".
The second time I saw WSS (which was much better this time around) Matt H was filling in and I would have much preffered him to be Tony.

Posted: 10/5/09 at 12:17amI liked him in Grey Gardens.......but in WSS as Tony?? I was half expecting him to come out singing "I AM WHAT I AM" I don't know....I just picture Tony as this manly man and Matt Cauvenaugh just is too girly for me.....I'm probably gonna get bashed a bit.....
