It's only what I've heard. I made that quite clear in my posting. I just can't see paying a lot of money to see what will be, from all indications, a sub-par performance of a show I have connected with very personally and deeply.

Sub-par is a bit harsh, I think.
How can someone connect the same way to the role who hasn't had the rehearsal and onstage time that the regular leading lady has? Moore has a tough job.

Maureen Moore is fantastic. She is so unnappreciated--she has been the standby for years now. It's time she got her own role. Anyone who could track down a video of the 90's NY City Opera "A Little Night Music" as broadcast on PBS would be wise to do so--she gave a phenomenal Charlotte.

I have to admit that I'm a bit bummed about this. My tickets are for the evening show Wednesday, April 4th and I really wanted to see Christine. I will still see the show though because loved the documentary and have enjoyed all the songs I've heard from the score.

Tonight will be my 4th time seeing Grey Gardens, my third time seeing it with Maureen Moore on. I am VERY excited about getting to see her again tonight! Christine is fab, don't get me wrong, but Maureen is a sight to behold in the role. I would see it with Maureen if you have the chance, because who knows how many times she'll get to do the role. You wont be disappointed.

I think "sub-par" is not only harsh, but, from most accounts on this board, ridiculous. It's that sort of attitude that will keep the show from going on after Christine leaves. She's an amazingly talented lady, but it would be like saying there could be no more Ado Annies, no more Dorothy Brocks, no more Guineveres, or any other roles she's played. She's playing someone else, not herself. Other people should have the chance to show us their acting chops by playing such unique "characters" like the Edies. I am glad that she was there when I went to see the show, but if she hadn't been, I still would have gone.

All of these positive posts have been encouraging! I guess anytime there's an "above the title" star out, you're gonna be a little disappointed, but I'm looking forward to seeing Ms. Moore in the role. It is a shame when people go in to see a show already discouraged if the "star" is out. It's not really fair to the show, or the performers. I mean c'mon... these standbys aren't slouches.
Thanks for all the input!

The show is phenomenal either way. It's hilarious and heartbreaking and beautiful and tragic. Christine is a part of that, but the show itself is such an amazing show and I'm sure Maureen (from what I've heard) is great in it. You should still definitely see it. It might even be more interesting to see Maureen first. Don't get me wrong, Christine is brilliant. But definitely don't not see the show just because of her. I've seen it once and hope to see it many more times, and would not object at all to seeing Maureen.

I am sure this will land me in trouble, but I think Ebersole was better at Playwrights than on Broadway. (I saw it there once and on B'way twice.) There was a "phone-in" quality to her performance the last time I saw it. She just seemed to be going through the motions, especially during the second act where the sublime Wilson stole the show.
Also, by all accounts, Moore stands on her own 2 feet. So I think I will have to check her out over the next few weeks while Ebersole is out.
I can only think that the producers must not be thrilled with Ebersole's frequent absences. (And please, STAUNCH defenders, don't say that they aren't frequent. For the person who supposedly is filling the house, she is not "home" several times a month.) Of course, the plus to it, though, for the producers, is that it suggests that other actors can perform the role, too. This could possibly keep the show afloat after her departure, especially if they can get a "name."
Bottom line, I don't remember who posted it, but the show itself is great. See the show!

I understand where you're coming from, but I have to say that I laughed because isn't Christine a producer of the show, herself? I'm not denying the possibility of truth in the statement, it just struck me as funny.
I wholeheartedly agree with the "plus" of her absences. I mean, people are going in to see Maureen with this mindset that they're kind of daring her to be as good as Christine. Since, by all accounts, she is, that's great! It means others can, and will, do the role when Christine decides to leave.

I thought I'd bump this thread -- I saw Grey Gardens tonight, and Maureen Moore was fabulous! Now I've never seen Christine Ebersol in the role, so I can't make any judgements based on comparison, but I'm intimately familiar with the documentary, and was not disappointed. I don't feel like I "missed" anything, and it would be a shame if this show ceased to continue when Christine leaves.
Tomorrow will be Our Leading Lady and The Pirate Queen -- and for anyone who hasn't seen Inherit the Wind, do yourself a favor. I thought it was captivating!

Can someone take a picture at curtain call or something? I want to see what she looks like in costume! You would think they would at least release a press photo or something.

If anyone knows where I can find that, PM me. I saw clips of that on YouTube, and she is F*CKING FANTASTICK. I would LOVE to see her in Grey Gardens.

I saw it the first and only time with Maureen. I bought the ticket with the intention to see the Christine but I was not disappointed at all with Maureen. I think she sounds and looks a lot like Christine, atleast from my seat. I would like to see it with Christine still but Maureen was great and definitely did is worth seeing!
