Mayzie v. Kangaroo: Seussical the Musical

I'm auditioning for the same show and from what I gather Sour Kangaroo is definitly a bigger role, but you really have to have a big powerful voice and a big attitude too play the part.

I guess it would depend on what you mean by "bigger"--more actual time on stage vs. more songs, etc. In the production I saw last month at OCU, it seemed like Mayzie had the bigger part, although the Sour Kangaroo is on stage a lot at the beginning and the end of the show (anytime the citizens of the Jungle of Nool are on).

"Sour Kangaroo" is an audience favorite, since typically the actor that plays this role belts all her songs. There is even a section where she belts on and on - and the six times I have seen professional productions of the show, the audience goes nuts over it. She also has the "R-E-S-P-E-C-K" belt which audiences adore.

"Sour Kangaroo" I would say has the same amount of stage time as "Mayzie." They are both diva-types. Mayzie sings less, I believe, but has more scenes.

If you're a strong singer who can belt, go fo Kangaroo. If your singing isn't the greatest, go for Mayzie.

So there you have it. Even though Mayzie is in more songs, Sour Kangaroo seems to sing more.

Again, both are great parts and you will be happy with both.

For those who have done the musical:
How did the bowing take place? When I saw it, out of all the girls... I remember the Sour Kangaroo the most, but I'm not sure if Mayzie was the bigger role becuase the bowing was really strange.

they're both great parts and you can belt and be sassy on both... I love Sour Kangaroos songs and its just a fun, diva, in your face part... But Mayzie is a bigger part, and is more significant... she changes the most in the show, from the self centered bird to the sensitive bit with Horton when she realizes she cant take care of the egg and she "finally did something right"... Mayzie is a big meanie and the kids wont like you lol... but she causes much conflict in the show, Gertrude's tail, Horton's Egg, etc. A fun supporting part that requires great singing and acting.. She cames out before Gertrude for the curtain call... The kangaroo is a really fun part, but all of her songs are basically the same and she doesnt act all that much.. just a lot of sass.

nope, not in the court scene.. but she's in the curtain call and comes out right before Gertrude, which is a few after the Kangaroo. I'd go with Mayzie if you wanna act a lot and twist the audiences emotions... they're going to hate you because you're mean to horton, love you because you're so outrageous, feel bad for you during the sad bit before solla sollew... if you want to just have fun and just belt the crap out of songs, go for the Kangaroo.. very sassy and just fun part, they'll remember your voice... but it's not really significant.

i love how everyones doing seussical this year! I was Horton with one cast and General Schmitz in the other. This show is not as easy as it looks, but it's very fun..

j/w...in the professional production did they have Vlad Vladicoff actually fly in the scene where he steals the speck?

I definitely agree that Mayzie is the bigger character, but apparently my choir director was looking through and comparing the OBC recording to the script that he has and he says that it is different.

Anyway, I think that if Seussical the Musical was a limited run to only opening in the summers it would have done much better. It's a great musical, and it's harder to sing than everyone expects it to be. I just think that if the show was only open in the summer it would have done great because it would be the perfect oppurtunity to take kids to NYC and have them experience a broadway show.

Alright... I'm playing Mayzie LaBird in the Seussical production right now that my school is doing, and that question has been bothering me for quite some time! ;_; I'm really sad because I bow before the Sour Kangeroo, but I have 4 solo songs, and the Sour Kangeroo has 4 main songs, but they're not solo songs. And, I think Mayzie has to do a lot more with the plot. I've worked so hard in the play, and it stinks how I have to take my bow before her. Also, in my production, the whole Chorus sings during "Chasing the Who's", so it's not like it's her song anymore, it's more of a Chorus song, so now the S.K. only has 3 main songs.

Also, to answer a few questions, after "Mayzie in Palm Beach" and "Amayzing Horton", I'm gone for all of Act II. ;_; lol I'm not in "People Versus Horton the Elephant", but I come on stage right before "Oh the Think You Can Think Reprise". I just think Mayzie's a bigger part because the story seems to revolve around her more than it does the S.K. Also, if you look at the Broadway list, the main characters are Cat in the Hat, Horton, Gertrude, THEN Mayzie, then JoJo, and the S.K. is somewhere further down. ;_; Someone please tell me why the S.K. has a bigger curtain call then me.
