Went to see Incognito tonight. Was a little mystified as to what was going on up on the stage. Before it started, I notice sitting about 3 feet away from us on the aisle was Joel Grey and his daughter Jennifer.
After it was over, my wife introduced herself and told him she was a big fan of his work - especially Cabaret - and he could not have been nicer. He offered her his hand and she returned the greeting. I really surprised him by telling I enjoyed his portrayal of Billy the Kid from the 60's tv series Maverick. He said, quite proudly, "Yes I was Billy the Kid" . I shook his hand as well. This was the highlight of the evening as the show was all over the place.
Great story, Roxy. I love when these encounters end up being good. About to read Joel's autobiography...just as soon as I've finished Barbara Cook's...
I met him last week. A very nice man. I was a mess inside though! Our conversation was over gay marriage as he officiated over Rod and Rickie's vow renewal at Avenue Q.

I sat next to him at The Crucible. He was very approachable.
Joel Grey is awesome! I remember back in the 1980s he played Jack Point in "Yeomen of the Guard", as part of a PBS series of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Jack Point is a tough character to play, and operetta to boot, but I thought Grey really pulled it off and was great in the part. Alas, I live nowhere near NYC and will never meet him, but I'm glad to read about those who do. He seems like a very genuine guy.
I don't usually approach celebrities when I see them but Joel Grey sat in the row across from me at The Norma Heart and I couldn't resist. He was very sweet.

That's funny, I was sitting right behind him at The Crucible! You and I must have been quite close to each other. I didn't speak to him at The Crucible because I was with my girlfriend, who gets really embarrassed when I approach celebrities, lol. Lucky for me I had met him once before, a few years back. I couldn't agree more, he's very sweet!

Ha! I didn't realize BWW had posted anything. It threw me out just as I started typing and then I got stupid pop-up windows (looked like mal-ware, first one told me Whatsapp needed to be renewed and link to do that, second one was something saying my phone had a virus and to click a link to get a virus scanner). It freaked me out so I quickly closed everything...
What I was gonna say is that I can only second what others have said. I went to his book signing at the Drama Book Shop and he was very sweet to everyone. I got my book signed for a someone else as their birthday present, and asked if he could sign it for them, and he even offered to write "Happy Birthday" which I thought was so nice. He also very graciously took pictures with everyone who asked.
