I'm more curious about the legal issues regarding the show. "Who does the role belong to?" is a good question to ask here, I mean, I can't imagine her doing this without the writer's permission, NBC's permission, etc, will they be okay with this? Will they maybe even put some money into the show? Who knows?
I think this might work if the actual writers of the show are involved. Bottom line is, they wrote the character, yes Mullally and Hayes improvised a good deal of their stuff but the words were still on the page as well as the actual situations they found themselves in which a lot of the time is what made it funny. I'd still love to see it but it's going to be a challenge to pull this one off. And didn't Leslie Jordan's character die in the terrible series finale?

Karen has said she has already worked a deal where she can bring Karen to the stage.
Comparing Karen to Martin Short is like comparing apples and fruit cocktail. Karen vs an evening of Martin Short's many many many characters. Maybe Karen could do monologues of The Great Ladies of the Stage. Remember, the enterprise is predicated on the audience finding it "hysterical" that Karen's going to say "Oh, eff you."

And again, Martin Short created most of his own characters, and dragged them from show to show in the 70s and 80s. Karen didn't appear on both SCTV and SNL. Thank god.

Yes, the Beverly Leslie character was carried to his death from his balcony by a gust of wind in the series finale.
Coincidentally, in the same year, the series "Vegas" had Lara Flynn Boyle die by being carried away from the casino rooftop by a gust of wind.

"How ticked off are theatre people at M.M. for abruptly backing out of a show and causing its demise? "
I don't think it has been proven that she is responsible for the show's demise. Seeing how quickly the furor died down, I now HIGHLY doubt she was completely at fault. No lawsuits, no further news. I think there are 2, 3, or 4 sides to this story. I think she would be smart to collaborate with Hayes and Shelly Morrison. However after reading that curmudgeonly Advocate interview, I don't think Hayes would be lining up to do this.
