Someone could probably write an interesting women's studies paper about why the term triple threat seems to be traditionally applied more to women than men, even though it would be just as appropriate for them. "The semiotic implications of "threat" imply a danger to the dominant hegemony of the masculine identity construct in Western culture and by extension the theater environment...."

alan cumming can dance? wow, that's news to me. (not snarky, serious, i've never seen him dance)
Now, as for my pick, if Tyler Maynard isn't a TT he can fake it real good.
now, i will leave th is topic, never to return because I know that one is gonna get my ass torched.
Yes, I was just thinking Alan Cumming, too, and wondering what is he up to these days . . .

Liz- The huge, legendary stars/roles in Broadway musicals actually seem to me to skew female more than those in, say, Hollywood movies. Am I just seeing a pattern that isn't there?

James Brennan, who did the tours of ME AND MY GIRL and CRAZY FOR YOU (and was the Broadway replacement for Harry Groener), is a true triple threat. Quadruple, actually, because he also directs.
Gary Beach is another triple threat - though not a traditional leading man.

Thanks for the update re Cumming, luvtheEmcee.
Michael Berresse was a wow in Kiss Me Kate, such an acrobat, scaling down the whole facade of that set, the audience I was with were knocked out--so was I!
I've seen Piazza many times and he is so alive in his role he has been completely different every time and that is very hard to do, to be so fearless and "there." The mark of an extraordinary actor. I see places where he could easily steal certain scenes but he does not, he holds back. The brother-brother interactions are so developed and great fun to watch. One of my favorite things is to watch him walk in perfect enfolded unison with Berry down the steps on the hasty exit from the church. He's very gracious at the stage door as well.

Plum: I would have trouble saying either way with any certainty, but the term "triple threat" definitely is applied more frequentley to women than men (and if my hypothetical academic paper is really Women's Studies, there's a certain mindset that comes with that). Maybe you're right and more women's roles demand all three skills than men's roles.

Matthew James Morrison, with elan.
Yes, Bert in Mary Poppins is a true triple threat role. Good suggestion, Mr Bennett. That must mean Gavin Lee (the current Bert in London) is a triple threat. In fact, now that I think of it, he exemplifies everything I imagine a triple threat to be. The role of Billy calls for a triple threat too, but whether children are masterful enough to be deemed triple threats even before their voice changes is another question.
"Michael Berresse certainly deserved his Tony for Kiss Me Kate!"
Although Beresse is quite the triple threat and very sexy, the TONY Winner for Best Featured Actor/Musical in 2000 was
Boyd Gaines (Contact)
Other Nominees: Michael Berresse (Kiss Me, Kate)
Stephen Spinella (James Joyce's The Dead)
Lee Wilkof (Kiss Me, Kate)
and Michael Mulheren (Kiss Me, Kate)
ZONEACE,
My kids have "Annie" on DVD--the one with Alan Cumming. (They're not allowed to have "the other one"!) Even if you HATE "Annie," you should see it for Alan Cumming's big number, "Easy Street." YES! He can dance!!!!
Which one is he in? (I probably saw it and just had no idea it was him.)
When the Musical MARLOWE opened
One crtic said:
"Lisa Mordente" (Chita jr.) is a Triple Threat,
I just don't know which of her talent's is the most Threatening?"
that was nasty but kinda funny.
I think the days of the triple threat is gone.
In the Day Dick Van Dyke would be up there the Male category,
and I think in the younger Female Sutton is a great example.
P.S. Michael Arden's dnacing in PIPPIN in LA
really suprised me,
and if Twyla cast him in her new show,
Watch Out World,
He would be adorable as Bert in POPPINS

May I as why they aren't allowed to have "the other one"?

I like to see a Harold Hill that's a triple threat. Alas, we don't always get our wishes though.
You didn't like Mr. Walton in MUSIC MAN? I'm sorry to hear that. I saw him and I thought that he did a really wonderful job. To each his own I suppose.

The thread started about males, so
Terrence Mann
Raul Esparza
Hugh Jackman
Kevin Cahoon
Matt Morrison
and most of the other performers from The Rocky Horror Show, male AND female. That's why so many of them frequently work Broadway and Off Broadway shows.
Terrance Mann is a dancer, too? I loved him in Lennon, and have heard his voice on some cast recordings, but never seen him dance....

Although I didn't see the play, Terrence originated the role of Rum Tum Tugger in CATS, which took a bit of moving and agility to perform. Someone I know saw the play a few times and said Terrence stopped the show every night with his performance. The reviews were outstanding. Let's not forget his turn just a couple of years ago as Frank in ROCKY HORROR, which I did get to see a few times. While he had a few years on the rest of the cast, he did the role and did it well!!
Terry was also in the movie A Chorus Line as the dance captain. Although dancer is not the first thing you think of when you think of him, he can move as well as some of the other men mentioned on the list; so if they can be considered a triple threat, so can he.
I suppose you can tell I'm a big fan .

matt caplan (currently mark in rent) - if you've seen his performance of "tango maureen" you'd understand why he's a triple threat...AMAZING
