Not officially confirmed to be their "big" xmas musical... they are looking at a few others and either slotting this in before or after.
I think they'll end up doing this ... but in a way I kinda hope not because i'm kinda Sondheimed out, especially towards the end of the year with Into The Woods, Passion and the other one night Donmar events!
My fingers and all is crossed they finally do "Mame" - but they are wanting input from Jerry Herman and as yet haven't signed up a "star" for it, so it maybe delayed to next year.
Its having a Donmar event early Nov for the theatre fans (who are probably the only one who will go to see this piece sadly) and commercially I can't Merrily being a big hit a la the majority of their recent Xmas hits...
Night Music didn't do that well in the UK but has been stellar in NYC - but I think even a tranfer to Broadway for Menier wouldn't be in the pipeline as The Roundhouse have it slated for their coming seasons along with Anything Goes and Molly Brown.
Oh i hope its not another Sondheim, I assumed Merrily was before xmas as its been strongly rumoured for so long. Also if we had had Catherine Zeta Jones and Angela Lansbury do ALNM in LOndon it would have been a much bigger hit, the same way that without named stars it would probably have flopped in NYC, or maybe not happened at all.
I have only seen 2, (West Side Story and A Little Night Music), both which I adore, plus I saw Sweeney Todd on tour, that went a bit over my head, I am sure the proposed West End version will be much better?
I have got no intention of getting cast recordings to get to know Sondheim, I will see the shows as they come along, with In The Woods, Passion and Follies due on the West End over this season.
Trevor Nunn wont be asking to do 'The Bakers Wife' for them after his fiasco with it at the Phoenix -a very painful opening night- never felt a full house feel so empty in my life! It could be a a nice little show for them to do though as that is exactly what it is. Despite its cult following its never played Broadway and if given the Menier magic touch it could get there after all these years!
The Baker's Wife (or The Director's Wife as they called the Nunn production with the rather mediocre Sharon Lee Hill lol) is a brilliant show. It's full of simply stunning songs - Schwartz's finest score IMO. I saw the most recent rewrite production at Papermill five years ago with the awesome Alice Ripley and it was fantastic. Would KILL to see it at the Choc Factory or anywhere else!
