Menier Xmas Musical is...

anybody know?

Usually its all announced by now.

Lots of rumours floating around in May (which usually leads up to a June announcement) but its all gone very quiet.

Merrily apparently is being done now until Summer 2011 with Maria Friedman directing.

So what will it be? Something to mark Sondheim? (what's left that hasn't been done recently or in the pipeline) Mame? Pajama Game? Or something nobody has heard yet in the works?

I'm guessing something will announced by August?

Still The Menier Christmas musical has not been announced?

Just hit me, that 'A Chorus Line' would be a blinder of a show to have there, good prospects of a West End transfer too, but doubtful for Broadway as has been recently done?

...but they would have to stand in two lines!

Im guessing an announcement will come soon, as there will be something else between Aspects and the winter musical. Hope they give us something as good as the last few year.

lol Mama. A Chorus Line's a bit of a double-edged sword for the Choc Factory. Although it's an intimate piece dramatically, it needs a space far larger than that for its major dance moments.

I just had a thought regarding the Menier musicals.
The boards are constantly alive with chatter about the past, current and future big musicals that the Menier stages for our delight, Many mention how they would like the big musicals like 'Mame' etc etc done there.
It just crossed my mind ('not a great distance' -'Me And My Girl' 1984) as to how many
big musicals they have applied to stage at some time that have been turned down simply because the originators estates simply don't want their musicals simplified the Menier way????

Great idea, never seen the show, but would love to, done well would get a West End transfer and no doubt a Broadway one too.

Point taken about 'A Chorus Line' with the stage width, but the show does not have a set, so you have the whole depth of the stage to use, I no this might sound a bit stupid, but couldn't the creators use half a circle and a bit imagination with the choreography or do you need all the original cast?

Mama and Bob please step forward!

Its 'A Chorus Line' not 'A Chorus Semi Circle'. LOL
The choreography demanded from this show simple wouldn't work, sadly, on that stage. The show is about an audition for a major Broadway show so it could only be staged on a Broadway sized stage to have the desired effect.
It is simple that that made me think that there are so many shows that just cant be done there.

Just recently seen 'A Chorus Line' at The Pantages, Los Angeles, how f*($^£"! cool does that sound?

Get the point about this show not working, just a thought with The Menier ability to improvise, so changed my mind now to Miss Saigon, but please continue on other shows that won't work?

I am going to do a thread on Sunday abvout two possible shows that could get a revival at The Menier.

After watching paradise found in May me and the other half discussed how A Chorus Line woul work brilliantly at the menier, the intimacy of the space would really work for the show. however it clearly would need thinking through thoroughly in staging terms.

I would love to see A Chorus Line...

They looked at bringing the 2007 show over but apparently London has hardly no stages (that aren'y 2000+) with the width available to do this... the only theatres were Adelphi, Edward and Prince of Wales, which were all booked and are always booked up because they are stong medium-large houses that can stage big shows but not risk 2000 seats being sold every night.

Chorus Line should be done at The Chichester Festival. The Menier would do it well... but unless you cut the characters (never!) or split the stage so you had a platform raised about (not really sure how that would work) - its a difficult show to stage and no producer will gamble this show with mounting a production of it at the Drury Lane etc... Thats why I think a storng regional production followed by a limited season as a filler (if timed right) to a large house will be the only way we'll see Chorus Line lighting up the West End. Fab score and show. One of my favs.

I'm still shocked to see no Menier announcement....
I;d be happy with Mame, Pajama Game or Crazy for You

Beer? where, when, how?

i think a little creative thought could solve the staging problems, and the intimacy gained would be worth the effort.

Menier Xmas Musical is...

Great idea, having a split stage, now that could really work well.

You lost me a bit about the (2000+), I assume you mean seats, there are no theatres in New York that hold over 2000 people, in fact the 2006 revival played The Gerald Schoenfeld which holds a tad over a 1000. A show like 'A Chorus Line' would not secure a house like The Aldelphi, Prince of Wales or Prince Edward, as there would be bigger higher profile shows that could sell a lot better, so the theatre owners probably would not take 'A Chorus Line', it would get into one of the medium size houses, like The Noel Coward, Novello ot Lyric.

But with stage sizes, I would not have a clue, I do not know the size, depth, height or fly space for one London stage?

Menier Xmas Musical is...

yes please! is that a suggestion or do you know?
#20

Menier Xmas Musical is...

A suggestion. A really lovely show with a great, strong story. The setting couldn't be simpler. The Broadway production was just one set- no moving parts!
Its a brilliant score. AND you get a chorus line of boys in jockstraps!

Menier Xmas Musical is...

I think every show should have a Chorus Line of young lady adults, in just a thong!!!!

Or how about this show, another one that originated in London and has minimal set, 'How to succeed in Business Without Trying'?
#24

Menier Xmas Musical is...

'HTSIBWRT' didn't originate in London and certainly doesn't have a minimal set- the last Broadway revival had fully working escalators on stage!
#25

Menier Xmas Musical is...

ACL could never go into Novello/Garrick as the production currently is produced as those theatres stage width just aren't big enough... that was what I was talking about the 2000+ theatres plus Adelphi, Prince Edward/Of Wales being the viable houses for the show currently to fit into and as we all say, its doubtful and producer would risk entering those houses... maybe the prince of wales, but that theatre wont be free for a long long time!
