When did Idina Menzel become the go to replacement diva? Didn't she also fill in for Bernadette Peters because she took over Little Night Music?
Idina Menzel opened up the 2010 season of the Boston Pops this past May, and I thought she did an amazing job.

She did fill in for Bernadette, too. Looks like she picked a really good time to embark upon this symphonic endeavor. She's been really well-received, and has sounded amazing.

Idina really does sound incredible with a symphonic band. Whoever did the orchestrations and arrangements for her new tour did a wonderful job. The new ending of Defying Gravity is so powerful (perhaps more so than in the actual show itself).
If I bought tickets to see Patti Lupone and was offered Idina as a replacement ..... refund please.
Not even in the same class.
Its like buying a ticket to see Julie Andrews and getting Florence Henderson.

I thought Idina sounded great in Boston.... but it was probably one of the more disappointing concerts I've seen with the Pops. Her song choices were odd, her pacing was plodding at points, and her banter was good in spots, but just random in others. All that said, she did command the stage, and, as noted, she sounded fantastic.
Idina and Patti are not even close to being in the same league. What a letdown for people who already have tickets.
I wonder if people would have said the same thing 30 years ago ...
"We bought tickets to see the legendary Ethel Merman but got that young singer from Evita. Not even in the same class."
^ Interesting point best12bars. I think Idina will do a fine job. It seems like she may have toned down the grating, rock sound in favor of a jazzier tone, or so it seems to me. Somebody has to replace Patti, so who else would you all suggest if not Idina?
I'll be starting school in DC in the fall and this is great news. Of course I would prefer Patti, but I unashamedly love Idina and can't wait to see her.
