Mereb

Hi!

Next week my school is gonna start an amateur production of Aida, and I'm wondering if I can audition for Mereb, since I can't do Radames.

I'm a dramatic tenor, I've made Lefou in B&B, Peter in JCS. What do I need to be Mereb?

What exactly are you trying to ask? I'm confused by the question "What do I need to be Mereb?" I guess my answer is "a good audition." I don't know, clarify, please?

I have always thought Mereb would become more interesting and dynamic as a character if he plays it like he is in love with Aida. I dunno...sometimes the key to a good read, if they make you do any scenes, is to make a definite character choice. At least it shows you can bring the character to life. The danger is if they don't agree with your choices at all.

Oh ok, sorry!

I mean what tesiture is, is it a comic character, does it need an specific level of singing, dance, acting?

And what can I audition with? I mean, a song.

Get yourself the cast album, and read a synopsis. Familiarize yourself with the role, or at very least the show, before you audition.

Actually I got the CD and it's on of my favorite musicals, is just that everyone in my school that don't have the profile for being Radames wants Mereb.

I want to make sure my audition is different, that directors can see I can do that role for sure by choosin the right song for the audition and knowing things about the character that are not obvious. I'm thinking 'bout the "crush" you said with Aida, that can be interesting.

Watch old episodes of Scooby Doo and model your portrayal after Scrappy Doo. That's certainly how I read the character.

Also, probably a good idea to go bug Damian Perkins about it on MySpace. IDK, he seems desperate enough for validation to respond?

I see Merb as both a comedic and a dramatic role. He has some funny one-liners that are capable of getting laughs if done correctly and he has some heavy scene work with Aida. His songs are important because you need a touch of pop, but also a bit of reality to make it convincing. He knows the truth, but he has to be very cautious. His death scene can be tricky as it can be very poor if not done correctly because the writing for that scene is a little off. The key is to make it real. If you can convince someone that they're seeing real life on stage then you've done your job.

I don't want to come off wierd of insensitive....but are you black? That would be a good start of how to get the role. Mereb is black, right?

Go look up some of the videos of this show on Youtube...It seems like he's white or Latino in 9/10 of them...

I know when my school did Aida, he was Hawaiian.

I'm sure my color don't care, I'm from Mexico... obviously Aida won't be exactly black, so that don't worry me.

Doesn't anyone ever say or do anything nice anymore? I thought a part of the purpose of this site and these boards is for research. Maybe it is really just to put other people down. I'm not attacking you, I'm just tired of people being nasty on here lately.
