Merrily - movie?

what are your thoughts on this: "Merrily We Roll Along" as a movie musical? Not a big flashy production number laden movie musical, but one that focuses on the dramatic emotion and the characters using the songs to heighten the impact.

Only if the original cast is in it and they use the original costumes.

re: Merrily - movie?

weren't the original costumes sweatshirts with the characters names on em?

Only if they use the original cast from Sunday in the Park With George and the costumes from Pacific Overtures.

ACTUALLY... Ever since the La Jolla Playhouse re-write, I've thought that "Merrily" would make a very good film in the right director's hands.

A better film than a stage play, IMO.

Its artistic possibilities are great but any studio/director willing to take this project on would have to be crazy.

This is the worst idea ever.

re: Merrily - movie?

I agree that there wouldn't be an audience for it. There isn't even enough of an audience for it on stage.

They can cast John and Queen in the roles. Apparently they are HOT.

re: Merrily - movie?

I think it would do well in an indie situation. Do a great version, that isn't flashy and isn't garish. Let the music and book speak for itself and I think, even if it isn't a huge box office success, that it would be a great movie.

re: Merrily - movie?

i think it would be great with hugh jackman or patrick wilson and (don't hate me) gwenyth paltrow.

re: Merrily - movie?

So is Wagner, but you don't see anybody running out there to make a movie of the RING CYCLE.

re: Merrily - movie?

I think I'd rather see someone with more potential "darkness" that can also turn on the charm when needed... like Robert Downey Jr. as Franklin.

Gwyneth would make a nice Beth, but I cringe at the thought of seeing her in any kind of fat suit (again). And "Mary" struggles with her weight throughout the story... It can't exactly be overlooked or cut without a major ongoing rewrite in her character. Not sure who I see as Mary. I'd love to see someone like Bette Midler, but she's too old now... and who is "like" Bette Midler these days??? But I'd love to hear her sing "Make It Like It Was" and zing off those drunken one-liners. She'd kill in the part AND break your heart... (okay, 15 years ago). And I can't think of a Kingras off-hand. Hmmm....

EDIT: Michael Bennett --- I just read your comment. LOL! It's so true. I still see it as a good film, even if I am the only one there sitting in the audience.

Toni Collette would be the logical choice for Mary.

Children & Art step away from Merrily We Roll Along!

Now Toni Collette I could get behind!

Make it six. As much as I love the show, though, I know it's just never going to connect with a wide audience. I can't imagine a film version fairing any better.

re: Merrily - movie?

Michael Bennett--- Toni Collette came to my mind first as well... but I just don't see her as "edgy" enough for Mary. She can be very funny, sympathetic, campy... but I've never seen her pull of "crusty" or even "bitchy" very well... and I think Mary needs that in her. But dang, she could sing it. And hell, she's a good actress, and maybe she could show us some acid in the part.

Let's put her down for the movie that will never be.

You totally left me out. That makes 7. re: Merrily - movie?

That is plenty for an indie pic. re: Merrily - movie?
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

*Is number 8*

Hell, I'd see a Merrily movie even if they did cast Gwenyth as Mary. I'd hate her for stealing my part, but I'd see it.

re: Merrily - movie?

Definitely. And I'd go see it at least three times, so that's almost like eleven people going to see it.
