After seeing her in Mother Courage, I would LOVE to see Meryl Streep play Mamma Rose, even if the show were adapted into a play (isn't that how it started out anyway?), though her voice wasn't too shabby in Mother Courage. Anyone agree? She is a powerhouse!
Gypsy was based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee. Streep can do anything, but it's Patti's turn!

Streep CAN do anything. But she would be a perfect MAME.
No, it's not how it started out anyway, and yes, Streep can do anything. But I agree with TomMonster: we've had enough Roses who can act it but not really sing it. The part was written for a powerhouse belter, and it's Patti's Turn.
If Patti can't do Gypsy the play, maybe she can incorporate the big gypsy songs into her concerts a la sunset.
I'd love to see Streep do the role. I think Rose is like Hamlet, everyone brings something new to the role. And Patti has just had her turn...

HaHa, good point, Michael...
I'm with those tired of the Roses who can't handle the vocals.
Yes, Patti had her turn. But she was so spectacular, she should get to play it more places. But the bastard Laurents won't allow her to come to NYC with it. Which sucks. Though I have a feeling her turn isn't over just yet.
I never liked her "acting" I guess I'm in a minority. People treat her like Hollywood royalty. I only like her in She-Devil and Death Becomes Her. She was terrible in Angels in America.
Why is a performance never "enough" unless it is seen in NYC?
Because tons of fans couldn't make a trip to Chicago to see the performance, maybe.
Not everyone is as privileged.
I'd love to see Meryl as Rose. I couldn't help but think about Rose's Turn during The Song of the Great Capitulation In Mother Courage.
Not everyone is privileged enough to live near NYC and see everyshow on Broadway 5 times. (Although Patti's Gypsy was a very limited run.)
I would love to see Meryl in the role. Heck, I'd like to see her play Hamlet MB.
MB- they actually equate Rose to Lear then Hamlet.
Also doesn't Meryl sing?
And please in the case of Patti once always is enough!
Should have been Barbra.

I was about 10 when Tyne Daly played the role on Broadway, but I've read and heard from older friends that she was simply flawless in the role even if her vocals were rather weak, they say she was fierce and almost perfection on stage. I believe it'd probably be the same if an actress of Streep's caliber were to tackle the role. Honestly I'd much rather see her than LuPone anytime soon.
Streep does sing. Very well, actually. And she is a phenomenal actress. Mejusthavingfun-She's won two Oscars, and Emmy, has been nominated for somewhere around 13 Oscars (I don't know if that's the exact number, either way she holds the record). Not to mention she's one of the most versatile actresses known to Hollywood. I would treat her as royalty, too. And I do. But, again, it's your opinion.
