I don't think he was particularly young. Is it so difficult to imagine that he might not be with us anymore? Either way, I hope he just decided to leave the boards and is okay.
I always wondered what the show would have been like starring nonsinger Katharine Hepburn, who that year simultaneously starred in the film version of the source play and made her Broadway musical debut in COCO.
"If music. Is. No longer. Lovely."
I actually would really love to have heard her bust through it.
In all actuality though, I think Daly would be entirely wrong for this show. She's always had kindof a grounded blunt quality that would be at odds with the kooky Countess Aurelia.
Riedel writes: "I've always been a fan of Tyne Daly's"
Tyne Daly's what? Voice? Comic timing? Rear-end?
jv92, Not sure where there is an inconsistency in Mack and Mabel - unless you mean Tap Your Troubles Away, which works ironically in the show. Look What Happened to Mabel is perfect for the naive (at the time) character's utter surprise. Time Heals Everything is also perfectly character driven and, yes, a gorgeous ballad.
I don't think there is a song in the score that does not come out of the moment in the story being told. We should get scores (and shows) written and directed with such know-how and talent, as Mack and Mabel today -- but we get garbage written and directed by so many hacks, such as -- well you can fill in the blank with any number of "hits" over the last twenty five years..
I saw the original production with Preston & Peters
The big knock on it was the down ending. The story was not supposed to be a happy one .It was a downer in real life. The musical numbers were very good. The staging by Champion was first rate. There was a scene with the Keystone Kops trying to rescue someone from a burning building I believe. Tap Your Troubles Away was dynamite. Hundreds Of Girls had the famous girls on a corkscrew slide. The opening number with Preston on a bare stage singing Movies Were Movies with clips from the actual Keystone Kops behind him was a stroke of genius.
The show was 10 times better than most of the stuff that gets put on today. Some shows, no matter how good they are, simply do not catch on for no apparent reason. I am still trying to figure out one of the great mysteries of the Western World & that is the failure to even nominate it for Best Score
I agree 150% percent (not a real thing, I know) that Herman's lack of a NOMINATION for MACK AND MABEL was criminal...CRIMINAL! It's very nicely crafted and tuneful, with several first rate numbers, and no false rhymes. (Compared to what won that year.)
Yeah, where is After Death? Maybe he's blocked us all and is only communicating with himself about DEAR WORLD and MARY, MARY these days. Or in deep mourning about the closing of GIGI.
