I saw Dennehy, Dustin and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The P.S.H/Mike Nichols production was breathtaking, heartbreaking and the best in my opinion. My problem, with Dennehy was he was likable. He was a Willy you would want to have a beer with. Big, gregarious man. He would be liked. Dustin was too weasely for my liking. He would annoy everyone. I'm seeing Nathan in April and thought his casting was odd, but I am a great fan of Joe Mantello's work (except for the bloated Wicked - his cash cow.)

These are lazy, sloppy lyrics. They are NOT slant rhymes. A slant rhyme is words that look like they should rhyme, but don’t quite. For example, “pain” and “again “ or “food” and “wood”. What is passing for lyrics today is total garbage.

Critics have no relevance today. Not one reads them. They can't kill a show like they once could. Audiences will see what they want and to hell with critics. And that its why garbage runs for years. Audiences have plebian taste.

These comments make Got Tu Go Disco seem like superior fare. Yikes!

To get back to the topic: The understudy was not very good last week. Still having a little trouble with lines. The play is preposterous and hits a person over the head with a sledgehammer with its "relevant" message about straight white men. Yet, it is not boring and the actors playing the three sons (although dealing with roles that are so removed from reality) are quite good. Hard to recommend but if you find yourself in the theater, it's only 90 minutes, but get there late if ear piercing...

The play is a mess. Not a bore, but sloppily written and unbelievable.

Face it , folks, the musical is a dead art form. Enjoy the corpses littering midtown.

Actually the church has outgrown it and wanted to dump it a few years ago, but aside from a nibble from Cameron MacIntosh, there were no takers.

I'd say Denzel just snagged a nomination, as did the the director and the revival itself. Interesting how it was virtually ignored from Drama Desk and Outer Critics nominations.

The theater is dead when it no longer adds anything valuable to our culture. Purchasing tickets indicates nothing except profits for producers.

I also saw the St. Joan at Shaw Festival last season, and it was sensational. i don't intend to see this production, but after seeing the set, which seems a bit bloated and overwhelming, perhaps MTC should have just imported the play from Canada.

Brilliant production of Lerner and Loewe masterpiece from beginning to end. Loved it, every minute of it!
