Do any of you think Micheal will win a Tony for his Fosco? I think he will at least be nominated, and I don't think I've seen any competitors who could beat him out. What do you guys think?
He will likely be nominated. It's too early to tell about a win.
Who do you think will be his competitors?
Jim Dale (The Threepenny Opera)
Kingsley Leggs (The Color Purple)
Michael McKean (The Pajama Game)
Brandon Victor Dixon (The Color Purple)
Ben Magnuson (Sweeney Todd)
Manoel Felciano (Sweeney Todd)
Just to name a few...
BTW, it's spelled "Michael".

It could be harder for him to win if he leaves when he is currently scheduled to (sometime in March).
That's true.
Why does he only have a month contract anyway? That's an unusual contract length, and the rest of the cast is contracted for a year.
I didn't know he was considered a supporting actor instead of leading. I believe Manoel Feliciano has bigger chances of winning in the supporting actor category.

I *love* Michael. But I don't think his performance in WIW is Tony worthy.
Now if he could be considered for PATIENCE, oh yeah. But not WIW.

His performance gets both critic and fan nods - so I think he has a good chance to win the TONY.
I hope he does win!
Manoel is going to be stiff competition to everyone! The Barber is looking very TONYFIED this year!
I was so afraid this topic was referring to that horrid West Side Story studio recording where he "played" Tony and Barbara Bonney "played" Maria.
ze emcee,
Michael Cerveris will be considered a Leading Actor.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of an extension since he received good reviews for his performance (and now that the show has extended it's booking period.) Maria's contract is nine months (don't know about the rest of the leads). I do think if he leaves on March 12th it will hurt his chances of a nomination. If he does extend I think he's a good bet to receive one in the Best Featured Actor category. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for both the extension and the nomination. Critical recognition of this type has escaped Michael in the West End and I'd love to see him recognized for this performance.
I disagree Chrys...I think Fosco is definitely a Tony-worthy performance (at least in a supporting category). But I won't argue with you that Bunthorne was certainly "award-winning" material for Michael lol!

I think the Fosco characterization was a much more layered interpretation than the Bunthorne role. Fosco hides a truly villainous and ruthless facet behind the charming and comedic facade. Michael's Fosco provides the light relief and real genuine laughter as well as some chilling moments in THE WOMAN IN WHITE.

Agreed Jo! This is a performance that shouldn't be overlooked!!! I really don't know what the "Tony" people base there decisions on but if the performance itself means anything then this one means alot.
I really loved this production even more than the London one!! Go and see it everyone even if it's out of curiousity!
he's brilliant in the show. I honestly think that in a script it must look like he doesn't have a lot to work with-- compared to Glyde and Hartwright... however, he just steals that show. He has to be celebrated for that...

I think Michael Ball does a fabulous job in Fosco; he really lifts every scene he appears in, sings like a dream, and gives a multi-layered performance to a part that could have come across as nothing but a buffoon.
I certainly hope a Tony nom is in the offing; his performances certainly deserves one.
