Had a chance to catch the first preview last night, but no time to write a review just yet. I know there's already a negative post on the "other" board about the show, and although it's not perfect, I don't think nearly as bad as that post makes it out to be.
Michelle Pawk, for me at least, was the standout and stole the play. She was nothing short of fantastic. She makes a bold character choice throughout, that for me works. She is playing a ballsy woman and is pitch perfect.
Mark Linn Baker also turns in a comediclly timed, all around good performance.
The play itself, I thought, was strong, not perfect, and not life altering, but strong.
Surprisingly, while the set is there and serves its purpose its not as fantastic as those RABBIT HOLE or ABSURD PERSON SINGULAR sets were on that stage.
I thought Paul Gallo's lighting design was a strong runner-up to Michelle Pawk's performance. Everytime the play changes between past & present, the effect is seemless, and quite stunning.
It was the first preview, and hopefully the kinks will be worked out (although there is a character choice made by one of the other actress that really got on my nerves). It's simple and enjoyable though, and a nice evening at the theatre.

Posted: 9/22/06 at 10:54amCohen was good...all 3 men are just fine in their roles, Linn-Baker being the standout. Cohen certainly never misteps, and gives a solid performance. He IS Louie, but it's ultimately PAWK & LINN-BAKER who have the juciest roles, and do the most with them.

Patricia was a perfect choice to replace Jan Maxwell...she fits the part perfectly. She, is in great contrast to Pawk's character throughout and the two of them are funny to watch.
I'll should get my full review out sometime today.

Posted: 9/23/06 at 10:43ami didn't even know Jan Maxwell stepped out. that sucks considering i already got tickets. was there a reason why?

Posted: 9/23/06 at 11:00amNot sure if there was any reason given, although with her recent track recond...one can only speculate. It doesn't matter though, Kalember does a superb job - but this one is all about the PAWK anyway...damn, I wanna see it again just for her.

Saw this tonight and have to agree with LaCageFan...Michele was incredible. I actually loved the show, but Michele was the clear standout of the cast and was absolutely hilarious.
I loved the use of the set during the 60s and the present day...it defnitely worked. I was completely engaged the entire time (except during a stupid scene where the adult characters tell a bunch of jokes...that was stupid). Still an all around fun play...nothing earth shattering, but a very entertaining evening. So glad Michele is working again...she is a real star.
(And for those of you who want to know, she does not credit Mamma Mia in her bio.)
Have been very pleased with MTC's last three shows at the Biltmore...keep it up!
